Fit and access
Measure gates and turning room before choosing deck width
Measure three different widths
Deck or blade cutting width describes the strip cut per pass. Overall machine width describes the body and wheel envelope. Route width is the usable opening after handles, fences, wall trim, branches and steering room are considered. They are not interchangeable measurements.
For walk-behind mowers, check the widest point with the handle in the configuration you will use through the gate. For riding equipment, consider the mower deck plus any discharge chute and the clearance needed to turn. If the chute folds or is removable, follow the manufacturer's exact instruction rather than assuming it is safe to operate without it.
Map turns, not just straight lines
A mower that fits through a gate may still be hard to turn between a tree and a fence. Mark blind corners, retaining walls, ditches and narrow strips. A second pass pattern may work better than a large deck squeezed into a tight yard.
Plan storage and maintenance access
Measure the full storage doorway, floor space and route from the charging or fuel area. A foldable walk-behind still has to be lifted or rolled into its storage position according to the manual. A riding mower needs room for access and service. Do not choose a vertical storage arrangement unless the exact mower is designed and instructed to be stored that way.
Use the limit honestly
If a width requirement is essential, compare it with a published exact-model deck figure. If the dimension or position is unknown, do not count it as fitting. Check the physical machine and owner's manual before ordering.
