Three-way comparison
EGO ZT4205S, ZT4215S or ZT4204L? Compare 42-inch Z6 packages
The EGO ZT4205S, ZT4215S and ZT4204L all use a 42-inch Z6 zero-turn deck, but they are not interchangeable packages. The first two have e-STEER steering-wheel controls; the ZT4204L uses lap bars. Their included batteries and chargers differ, and those kit differences are the basis for EGO’s published maximum-area figures. None of those figures predicts exactly how far an individual lawn will mow on a charge.
First choose a control format
The ZT4205S is the older four-battery e-STEER listing: EGO describes the steering wheel as controlling the rear wheels and explicitly says it is not a tractor. The ZT4215S carries the same e-STEER format in a newer six-pack configuration. If you prefer lap bars, the ZT4204L is the relevant comparison; do not let the shared 42-inch deck obscure a different driving interface. If you want conventional front-wheel tractor steering, EGO’s TR4204 is a separate lawn-tractor product, not another Z6 zero-turn.
Compare the exact included battery and charger set
| Model | Control | Included batteries | Charger | EGO maximum claim |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ZT4205S | e-STEER | 4 × 12 Ah (48 Ah total) | 1600 W | Up to 2.5 acres |
| ZT4215S | e-STEER | 2 × 10 Ah + 4 × 6 Ah (44 Ah total) | 800 W | Up to 2 acres |
| ZT4204L | Lap bars | 4 × 10 Ah (40 Ah total) | 1600 W | Up to 2 acres |
The ZT4205S’s four 12 Ah packs exceed the other two packages’ nominal combined Ah, but capacity arithmetic alone is not a runtime test. The ZT4215S has six smaller packs and a different charger; the ZT4204L has fewer, larger packs and lap bars. Pick on the configuration you can charge, store and service, not on a simplistic “more Ah means this many acres” calculation. EGO’s model-specific maximums are conditional claims; lawn shape, overlap, grass growth, moisture, slope, selected speed, battery health and clipping setup can change the result. Plan extra capacity or a recharge break if your property approaches a published maximum.
Clipping choices need package checks
All three product pages describe multiple clipping routes. The ZT4205S page confirms two standard blades and says its mulching blades and mulch plug are separate. EGO lists ABK4200 as a compatible 42-inch zero-turn bagger and AMP4200 as the mulch plug. The compatibility matrix establishes fit, not inclusion. If bagging is a must, add the appropriate attachment to the budget and confirm its availability separately. If your essential condition is that it be in the mower carton, the mower page does not prove that for these package codes. EGO also says bagging and mulching consume more energy than side discharge; expect the same battery set to cover less lawn in those modes than the maker’s side-discharge-oriented headline might suggest.
Resolve what the documents do not settle
The ZT4205S page links a manual with a ZT4200S/ZT4200S-FC cover. That manual specifies 430 pounds without battery packs, but the exact product page’s FAQ says 320 pounds. Because the manual’s model-code bridge is unresolved and the official values disagree, do not use either number to size a trailer, ramp, floor or storage lift. Verify the label and manual delivered with the exact serial-numbered unit. The related manual’s safety guidance is useful context, not an exact-model substitute.
There is a similar availability caveat: EGO showed a notification sign-up on the ZT4205S page when checked, and it gave no current price. That is not proof of current stock or a retailer package. Check the seller listing for the exact SKU and supplied batteries/charger before purchase. For all three riders, measure the narrowest gate and shed opening, trailer deck and turning area. A 42-inch cutting width is not the machine’s complete transport dimension.
Which one fits the requirement?
Choose between ZT4205S and ZT4215S only after deciding whether four 12 Ah batteries with a 1600 W charger or six mixed-capacity packs with an 800 W charger better fits your charging routine; both use e-STEER and have manufacturer acreage claims. The ZT4204L retains a lap-bar control layout and a four-pack kit. Compare the exact battery set and controls you need, confirm accessories, and keep the maker’s acreage claim separate from a guarantee for your yard. For a tractor feel rather than zero-turn controls, evaluate the TR4204 separately.
