Model comparison
Which Honda HRN216 gas controls fit your routine?
Honda HRN216 earlier gas family
Honda’s U.S. HRN directory shows four discontinued HRN216 gas configurations: PKA, VKA, VYA and VLA. Their shared 21-inch GCV170 platform makes the prefix look interchangeable, but the exact suffix changes the travel control, blade stop and starter. Use this guide to identify an earlier model or evaluate a specific offer, not as evidence of current availability or a particular used mower’s condition.
Start with how the machine moves
The HRN216PKA is push-only. It has no powered wheel drive, so the operator supplies the travel effort. VKA, VYA and VLA add Honda Smart Drive, with five positions; Honda’s page gives a rounded 0–4.0 mph range, while the matching 2021-and-later manuals state 0–4.11 mph. Neither figure predicts a comfortable pace or a lawn-area capacity. The additional drive hardware also makes the powered models heavier on Honda’s listed dry weights. Confirm gate width, storage, lifting and the actual route rather than choosing solely by a 21-inch cutting width.
Separate blade control from engine starting
PKA, VKA and VLA use a flywheel brake: releasing the control stops the engine and blade together. The VYA’s Roto-Stop clutch lets blade rotation stop without stopping the engine. That can change pauses to empty the bag, but it is not permission to touch or clear the deck while the engine runs. Follow the exact owner manual for shutdown, inspection and maintenance. The VLA is the only one of these four with Honda’s self-charging key start; it also retains recoil backup. VKA and VYA use recoil start, and the VLA’s starter battery has its own care and warranty provisions.
Core mowing choices remain similar
Honda lists a steel deck, MicroCut twin blades, seven cut-height settings and Clip Director routes for mulching, bagging or rear discharge across these models. The page lists a standard 1.9-bushel bag. It does not document a side-discharge route or the HRX leaf-shredding setup. Choose among the four based on supported drive, pause and start controls—not a presumed acreage claim. The manuals say to add oil before first start, use fuel within the specified limits, avoid wet grass, and avoid steep slopes over 20 degrees while mowing across rather than up and down; those cautions do not certify any site as safe.
Check the exact used unit
Honda labels its gasoline mower line discontinued. The individual machine may have unknown service history, wear, parts or remaining warranty. Honda’s HRN216/GCV170 decompressor recall notice is serial-specific: it lists a frame range and selected engine numbers, but says many units in that range are not affected. Ask for the mower frame serial, check any replacement engine serial and confirm repair status with Honda or an authorized dealer. Model suffix alone is not recall clearance. Also select the operator manual for the mower’s actual frame serial and engine-emission label; the archived 2021-and-later manuals are not universal versions for every HRN216.
