Exact-model comparison

Honda HRX217K6VKA, VLA, VYA, HYA or HZA?

Honda’s final HRX gas lineup gives five different control combinations on a shared 21-inch platform. The first decision is not “Which HRX is best?” but which kind of self-propel control, starter, and blade-stop arrangement you will actually use. Honda marks the gas mower line discontinued; these comparisons help identify an earlier model or assess a specific listing, but do not establish present stock or condition.

Honda lists each with a 21-inch NeXite deck, GCV200 engine, twin MicroCut blades, seven cutting-height positions from 3/4 to 4 inches, and 4-in-1 Versamow for mulching, bagging, rear discharge, and leaf shredding. The standard catcher is 2.5 bushels. That shared platform explains why choosing a control feature matters more than assuming one of these versions has a wider or more versatile cut.

Start with the travel and pause controls

The three V-series versions—VKA, VLA, and VYA—use Select Drive. Honda describes an adjustable speed dial and engagement control with a 0–4 mph range. The HYA and HZA replace that with a hydrostatic transmission and Cruise Control. These are distinct systems, even though both propel the mower and have similar published top-speed ranges. If you already know that the hydrostatic setup is a must-have, the HYA is the lighter recoil-start version and the HZA adds electric starting. If Select Drive is acceptable, the three V choices let you focus on start and blade control.

VKA and VLA use a flywheel brake; VYA, HYA, and HZA use Roto-Stop. Honda’s manuals describe Roto-Stop as a blade brake clutch, letting blade rotation stop without the basic engine-and-blade stop behavior. That can be useful for a short pause, but it is not a substitute for shutting down before inspection, clearing, or leaving the mower. For ordinary mowing with no need to keep the engine running during a pause, the simpler control may be enough.

Choose starting by your real routine

VKA, VYA, and HYA are recoil-started; VLA and HZA add a self-charging key starter while retaining a recoil starter. The electric-start models still burn gasoline for mowing—the starter battery is not a traction or cutting battery. The manual explains that extended storage can leave the starter battery needing a manual-start mowing session to recharge. If key start is important, check its condition on the exact mower rather than relying on a model badge. Consider whether the starter and blade control you want justify the additional weight: Honda’s dry-weight specifications range from 89 pounds for VKA to 106 for HZA.

Use, storage, and purchase checks

Honda discontinued production of its gasoline HRN, HRX, and HRC mowers in 2023. A current manufacturer page that still publishes specifications does not prove a local dealer has a new unit, and an old warranty period is not a guarantee for a used owner. Before buying, verify the full model name and frame serial, compare the correct serial-range manual, inspect the blade-control and drive functions, check the catcher and rear shield, and ask for maintenance history. Honda’s HRN/HRX recall lookup includes some HRX217 K6 frame serials and explicitly says not every mower in the listed range is affected. Enter the exact frame serial or ask an authorized dealer; do not assume the exact model code settles the recall result.

The operator manuals cover gasoline handling, oil, air-filter and spark-plug care, blade inspection, and seasonal storage. Honda’s manual states fuel limits for the GCV200 and warns against slopes over 20 degrees; wet ground can add a loss-of-footing risk. Follow the exact manual and do not treat a self-propel system as added slope approval. If those gas-engine tasks or the weight are a poor fit, compare an electric walk-behind rather than trying to choose between the HYA and HZA on features alone.
