Lawn-tractor comparison

Husqvarna TS 140X 48 or 54? Compare with the TS 120

Compare Husqvarna's TS 140X 48 and 54 with the TS 120 46 and TS 120 54 by exact deck, engine, weight and accessory fit. The two TS 140X models share a feature family, but deck width changes access, package weight and the attachment SKU. Do not choose from a page headline or assume a matched attachment on one tractor fits the other.

What changes between 48 and 54

The TS 140X 48 (970846801) and TS 140X 54 (970846901) both use a three-blade stamped, reinforced-steel deck and a 24-hp Briggs & Stratton PXi2400 twin, engine model 44U877-0044-G1. Husqvarna's linked manuals list 499 pounds empty for the 48 and 516 pounds for the 54. Each has pedal-operated hydrostatic travel, cruise control, four anti-scalp wheels and a nose roller. The 54-inch deck is six inches wider, while the full tractor dimensions and turning radius still need direct confirmation for an access decision.

The TS 120 46 and 54 are not simply lower trim labels for the same deck. The 46 uses a 22-hp Briggs & Stratton EXi2200 twin with a two-blade 46-inch deck and 473-pound empty weight. The TS 120 54 uses a 24-hp PXi2400 and a three-blade 54-inch deck, weighing 516 pounds empty. The 46 and 54 TS 120 manuals and product pages differ, and the accessory tables do too. Compare exact model names and article numbers, not only a shared “54” label.

Check the route, not just mowing width

Measure the tightest gate, shed opening, corner, trailer and storage path using complete machine dimensions. Cutting width is not overall width, and the sources used here do not establish turning radii. A wider deck might reduce straight passes in a broad area, but turns, overlap, landscaping, grass condition and the access route can outweigh that theoretical difference. None of these product pages supports a guaranteed acreage or time-saving claim. If a 54-inch unit is close to your route limit, the 46- or 48-inch version may be the more workable configuration.

Match clipping mode to exact equipment

The TS 140X 48 accessory fit tables list the 48-inch mulch kit 531309642 and the 46/48-inch triple bagger 960730037; the latter is described as a nine-bushel collector. The TS 140X 54 tables list the 54-inch mulch kit 531309643 and 54-inch triple bagger 960730026, also listed as nine bushels. The attachments are sold separately; the mower's standard plan is side discharge with its deflector.

For the TS 120 46, the exact 46-inch double bagger 960730024 and mulch kit 531309580 fit tables name the model, but its linked 46/48 triple bagger table does not list TS 120 46. For TS 120 54, the product page links generic 54-inch bagger and mulch listings whose fit tables omit that exact variant. Those attachment claims stay unknown rather than being borrowed from the TS 140X 54. Verify the actual article number and fit list before buying accessory-dependent equipment.

Terrain and setup are separate questions

The TS 120 and TS 140X manuals describe a 15-degree private-garden mower limit, mowing up and down rather than across, and warnings about wet grass, edges and stability. That cap is not a safety guarantee. The manuals also caution that attachments can change stability, and no attachment-specific slope number is established here. A buyer's essential slope constraint must match one verified operating plan; do not carry a mower-only limit into a catcher or mulch setup by assumption.

The TS 120 product pages give approximate minimum cutting heights that conflict with their manuals' 1.0-to-4.0-inch tables. The TS 140X pages make the same approximate 1.5-inch/minimum claim while their exact manuals list 1.0–4.0 inches. Leave the minimum unresolved if it is a deciding requirement. The 48/54 TS 140X manuals list four anti-scalp wheels and a nose roller; those features do not prove operation over every uneven surface.

A practical shortlist

  • TS 120 46: consider the narrower TS 120 deck when its exact, separately sold 46-inch double bagger or mulch-kit fit meets the clipping plan.
  • TS 140X 48: compare it for a middle-width three-blade reinforced deck and exact 48-inch kit listings, while confirming full route clearance.
  • TS 120 54: verify access first; its apparent 54-inch accessory compatibility remains unresolved in the exact fit tables reviewed here.
  • TS 140X 54: consider the wider TS 140X with its exact listed 54-inch bagger or mulch kit, separately priced and installed under the accessory instructions.

These are not test results or a universal ranking. Treat the steering-wheel tractors as different buying configurations, check current serial-specific notices and retail package contents, and select only the clipping, terrain and access requirements that can be supported by exact evidence.

Primary sources: the four exact Husqvarna U.S. model pages and their linked manuals, plus the model-specific accessory pages cited in each review. The TS 140X 48 and 54 page images reuse one family rendering that does not visually distinguish those deck sizes.
