Lawn-tractor comparison
John Deere X750, X754 or X758? Compare diesel steering and traction
The X750, X754 and X758 share a diesel engine family, but they do not offer the same steering and traction layout. Compare those differences separately before choosing an optional cutting deck. Deere’s May 2026 U.S. specification identifies each deckless base item: X750 is 5854M, X754 is 5864M and X758 is 5874M. The base tractor numbers do not include a mower deck.
Three different layouts
- X750: power two-wheel steering and two-wheel drive, with turf tires.
- X754: power four-wheel steering and two-wheel drive, with turf tires.
- X758: power two-wheel steering and full-time four-wheel drive, with HDAP tires.
So the X754 is the rear-steering choice; it is not the four-wheel-drive model. The X758 is the four-wheel-drive choice; it does not add four-wheel steering. X750 is the simpler two-wheel-steer/two-wheel-drive arrangement. Each retains the steering-wheel lawn-tractor format. Deere lists the same 24-hp, 993-cc, liquid-cooled three-cylinder diesel engine and K90 hydrostatic transaxle for all three. The manuals and configuration specifications—not a vague “heavy-duty” label—should govern the accessory and safety questions.
Use turning figures carefully
All three tractors have a listed 25-inch turning radius. Deere separately publishes uncut-circle figures for decks: with the 54 HC it lists 32 inches for the X750 and X758 and 10 inches for the X754; with the 60 HC it lists 28 and 6 inches, respectively. Those numbers help explain why the X754’s rear-steering layout matters when mowing around obstacles. They do not guarantee that every tree, retaining wall or bed can be cut in one pass, nor do they establish the turning footprint with the 48A deck. Map the actual route and measure the complete tractor/deck setup before buying.
Choose traction independently
For an X700 buyer who wants four-wheel steering but does not require four-wheel drive, the X754 is the relevant model. For someone who specifically wants the listed full-time four-wheel-drive layout and HDAP tire equipment, the X758 is the alternative; it keeps two-wheel steering. The X750 shares the two-wheel-drive arrangement but has two-wheel steering and turf tires. Tire type and drive configuration are not a substitute for a safe operating plan. None of these descriptions says a steep or wet area is suitable to mow.
Budget and verify the deck separately
Deere lists compatible 48A, 54 HC and 60 HC side-discharge decks separately from all three base tractor codes. The 48A is a 10-gauge steel shell; the HC decks are 9-gauge. The 48A wheels rotate for removal; the HC decks use drive-over installation. Mulch-control attachments and bagging systems are additional, deck-specific parts. A collection setup may require a blower, chute, hopper and mounting/ballast parts, and applicability can vary with deck year and serial number. Check the exact combination before counting it as a workable mode or package inclusion.
For width questions, remember that deck width measures cutting swath, not total machine width. Measure the route, gate, trailer and storage opening with the actual tractor, deck and any collection equipment fitted. Obtain the operator’s manual matching the tractor serial and selected attachments before operating on grades or using other implements; these model comparisons do not establish full dimensions or a slope rating. Do not take a slope limit from a gasoline X700 manual or assume that an attachment shares a mower-only limit.
Make the finder answer the choice
Require diesel first if gasoline is unacceptable. Then choose steering and traction as separate conditions. A diesel, four-wheel-steer, two-wheel-drive answer points to X754; diesel, two-wheel-steer and two-wheel-drive points to X750; diesel, two-wheel-steer and full-time four-wheel drive points to X758. Selecting a minimum compatible deck width filters the separately selected deck plans, while requiring the mower deck to be included rejects these three deckless base items. If no one machine satisfies every essential condition, relax only a preference you genuinely can give up rather than combining capabilities from separate tractors.
