Lawn-tractor comparison

John Deere X730, X734, X738 or X739? Compare steering and traction

These four gasoline X700 tractors are easy to confuse if you compare only engine power or deck width. Deere lists the same 25.5-hp Kawasaki EFI power system, the same K90 hydrostatic foot-control transmission and the same selectable 48-, 54- and 60-inch mower-deck widths for X730, X734, X738 and X739. What changes is rear-wheel steering and drive to the front axle. The best starting question is whether your yard needs steering geometry, extra driven wheels, both or neither.

Make a two-by-two comparison

X730: two-wheel drive and power two-wheel steering. X734: two-wheel drive and power four-wheel steering. X738: full-time hydraulic four-wheel drive with power two-wheel steering. X739: full-time hydraulic four-wheel drive and power four-wheel steering. They are all steering-wheel lawn tractors, not zero-turns. The X738 manual describes its HFWD system as always engaged and without operator control; an X738 is not a two-wheel-drive tractor with a traction switch.

Four-wheel steering and four-wheel drive address different limitations. Rear-wheel steering changes how the tractor tracks during a turn; Deere’s 2025 U.S. specifications list a 25-inch turning radius for these tractors, but for the 54 HC and 60 HC decks they report smaller uncut-circle radii on four-wheel-steer X734/X739 (10 and 6 inches) than on two-wheel-steer X730/X738 (32 and 28 inches). Use those figures as deck-specific manufacturer data, not a guarantee that every tree or post takes one pass. Four-wheel drive is a separate hydraulic traction arrangement Deere says supports difficult ground conditions. It does not make steep or wet ground automatically appropriate for mowing.

Choose the deck as a separate configuration

Deere’s 2025 U.S. base item codes identify these tractors without mower decks: X730 5812M, X734 5822M, X738 5832M and X739 5842M. A 48A, 54 HC or 60 HC mower deck must be selected separately. A render showing a deck is not proof that a base tractor item includes one. Width is the cutting swath, not the complete tractor’s outside dimension. Measure the narrowest gate, trailer opening, shed entry and turnaround area with the exact deck attached; neither the product page nor the specification used here gives a full configured width or a yard-acreage guarantee.

The 2025 spec describes a 10-gauge shell for the 48A and 9-gauge shells for the 54/60 HC. The 48A deck’s wheels rotate to ease removal; the 54/60 HC decks use drive-over installation. Side discharge is supported when the chosen deck and deflector are properly installed. Deere also lists separate mulch-control parts and Power Flow collection-system components. Their compatibility depends on deck style and serial range, and collection requires the appropriate blower, chute, hopper, mounting parts and ballast. The base tractor codes do not include a mower deck, bagger or mulching kit.

Check slope limits against the exact setup

The North American operator-manual family covering X730, X734, X738 and X739 defines the basic setup as a tractor with mower deck and no additional attachments. It sets an 18-degree maximum for that configuration and a 10-degree maximum when using attachments. The same manual says to mow up and down slopes, not across; move slowly; avoid starting, stopping or turning on a slope; and do not mow wet grass. The limits are not individual-property safety certifications. Deere warns that risk increases near the ceiling; uncertain footing, ruts, wet turf, steering or stability means the job is not a safe match just because a slope measures below the number.

How the choice filters

If you require a conventional steering wheel, all four tractors fit that format. If you specifically require four-wheel steering, X734 and X739 remain; if you require full-time four-wheel drive, X738 and X739 remain. Asking for both leaves X739 among this quartet. An open lawn with adequate traction and few tight obstacles may not benefit from paying for both configurations; a route that demands close turning but not four-wheel drive points to X734. A difficult-traction requirement with ordinary front steering points to X738. X730 is the simpler two-wheel-drive, two-wheel-steer comparison.

A selected deck width is a configured accessory, not a standard feature of the four 2025 base item numbers. A finder requirement that the deck arrive included therefore excludes these exact base items unless a seller documents a bundled order. If bagging is selected, the questionnaire must use the attachment’s 10-degree slope limit rather than the 18-degree mower-only figure. Before a purchase, confirm current state availability, the complete deck and attachment codes, and the serial-specific Deere manual.
