Battery and exact configuration

RYOBI P1109 mower: P1109BTL tool-only or P1190 kit?

The P1109BTL and P1190 listings point to the same 18V ONE+ HP Brushless 16-inch push-mower body, but they answer different battery-ownership questions. The shorter P1109 model number identifies the mower family; the suffix and bundle code identify what comes in the carton. Decide first whether your shed already has usable 18V ONE+ batteries and a charger, then check whether this compact machine fits the route and clipping routine you need.

Compare the packages, not only the mower name

P1109BTL is tool-only: the exact manufacturer page says its battery and charger are sold separately. The mower manual lists a start key with the machine; do not mistakenly assume that the key is another battery accessory you must buy. This code is a reasonable package choice for an owner who already has compatible 18V ONE+ packs and charging equipment. It is not a ready-to-mow battery bundle.

P1190 includes the P1109 mower, two PBP005 4.0Ah batteries and an 18V charger according to its exact kit listing. The page’s itemized kit list names a P118 charger, while its descriptive copy names P117; the exact charger code is therefore unresolved even though a charger is listed. The mower body has one battery port. The two-pack carton does not establish that both batteries run simultaneously or that the mower automatically switches packs. It does give the buyer two included batteries and a charger, but how that affects a real mowing session depends on grass, weather, settings and pace.

RYOBI advertises up to 40 minutes and up to one-third acre for this configuration using two 4.0Ah packs. Those are maker maximum claims, not a measured runtime, an area guarantee or a promise that any property of that size can be cut without a recharge or interruption. Leave margin for thick or wet growth, bag emptying, turns and conditions unlike the manufacturer’s estimate. The bare-tool P1109BTL package does not include the packs used for that estimate.

Check whether a 16-inch push mower fits the work

The 16-inch cutting path is narrower than RYOBI’s 20-inch 40V HP models. It can be easier to thread through narrow lawn sections and turns, but an open lawn takes more passes. The P1109 body is operator-pushed; a brushless motor does not mean it propels the wheels. The manual documents mulching and rear bagging with the plug or catcher as alternative setups, not side discharge. Its seven cutting-height positions span 1.5–4 inches.

For a buyer whose main need is less physical pushing over a long route, compare a self-propelled model. For a buyer whose main need is fewer passes, compare a wider deck and measure the mower’s full width, not only its advertised cut path. If your existing batteries are RYOBI 40V packs, they are a different platform from 18V ONE+; do not assume a 40V kit battery can power this mower.

Which one suits your package need?

  • Choose P1109BTL if you want the 16-inch push mower body and already own compatible 18V ONE+ batteries and a charger. It fails a requirement that the mower kit include a battery.
  • Choose P1190 if you want the same mower body supplied with two 4.0Ah packs and a listed 18V charger. Its page has a P117/P118 charger-code conflict, it still has only one mower battery port, and the published runtime/area statements remain conditional estimates.
  • Compare a different configuration if you require self-propelled travel, a wider cut, side discharge or a 40V platform. Those are machine differences, not things a battery kit can add.

Allow for operating limits

The mower manual sets a maximum slope of 15 degrees and says to mow across a slope rather than up or down. Treat 15 degrees as a manual ceiling, not a guarantee that a particular incline is safe. Avoid wet grass and poor footing. Before changing between mulching and rear bagging, clearing clippings or making an adjustment, stop the mower, wait for the blade to stop, remove the start key and remove the battery. The manual warns not to hose the mower. Store the folded machine indoors and dry.

Read the P1109BTL assessment and P1190 assessment for exact model-specific tradeoffs. The package decision is only one part of fit: a compact push mower still needs to match the lawn’s width, terrain, clipping plan and operator’s comfort.
