RYOBI 40V CrossCut choices: 20-inch self-propelled or 21-inch push?

These are three separate purchase codes in RYOBI’s 40V HP CrossCut walk-behind lineup. RY401260 is a 20-inch rear-wheel self-propelled kit with one 8Ah pack. RY401220 is a 21-inch push mower with two 6Ah packs. RY401210 is a 21-inch self-propelled AWD mower with two 6Ah packs. The most useful question is not which sounds more powerful; it is what travel arrangement, cutting width and battery package you actually need.

Start with how the mower moves

RY401220 is push-only: the operator supplies the forward force. RY401260 is rear-wheel self-propelled, so powered travel is available but the operator still steers. RY401210 is a self-propelled AWD configuration with an on/off all-wheel-drive switch. The last two should not be treated as the same drive system: rear-wheel drive is not AWD, and a push mower does not have a drive-wheel system. If a drive type is essential, choose that before comparing kit capacity.

Use the RY401210 only when AWD itself matters. The manual’s 15-degree limit still applies, AWD does not make a slope safe, and the mower remains a walk-behind. If you simply want powered travel on a route that suits a rear-drive mower, RY401260 is the relevant configuration. If you want no powered wheel drive, the push RY401220 is the one that fits that constraint.

Compare battery packages without predicting acres

RY401260 includes one 8Ah pack and RYOBI claims up to 50 minutes and an ideal area of up to one-half acre. RY401220 and RY401210 each include two 6Ah packs and RYOBI claims up to 70 minutes and up to three-quarters of an acre. The two-pack models’ nominal 12Ah is the total across the supplied batteries, not an independent runtime measurement. Their manuals describe selecting which pack is active through the battery key; do not read “two packs” as simultaneous discharge.

All time and area figures are conditional manufacturer estimates. Grass height, moisture, cutting setting, terrain, drive use, blade selection, turns and interruptions change the job. If you must finish a known parcel without a charging break, consider the yard itself and your mowing schedule; none of the listed estimates guarantees a particular result. A minimum kit-pack count can separate the one-pack RY401260 from the two-pack 21-inch kits, but it cannot prove the right capacity for your lawn.

Width and clipping equipment still matter

The 20-inch RY401260 has a one-inch narrower cut than either 21-inch model. That difference can matter in narrow routes, but cutting width is not overall machine width. Measure the complete mower and route through gates, turns and storage. Each exact package documents bagging, mulching and side discharge. RY401260 and RY401220 list a catcher, mulch plug and side chute as package contents. RY401210’s body manual lists a catcher and side chute, while its product page describes an integrated mulching door; the documented mulching mode does not make a separate loose mulch plug appear in its package.

RYOBI calls each configuration CrossCut multi-blade. The body manuals also discuss a combination-blade alternative, with the combination blade noted as the longer-runtime choice, but exact optional lower-blade accessory contents should be checked rather than inferred from the CrossCut label or the fact that a mower bags.

Choose a useful operating plan

Choose RY401260 if your essential arrangement is a narrower 20-inch cut, rear-wheel self-propelled travel and one included 8Ah battery. Choose RY401220 if push-only movement is acceptable and the two-pack kit, dual-port body and 21-inch width suit your plan. Choose RY401210 if you require a self-propelled AWD configuration with two packs. Any of the three can fit bagging, mulching or side discharge if you use the exact supplied arrangement.

The manuals also give shared ownership cautions that should change a plan: avoid wet grass, do not mow slopes over 15 degrees, and mow across a slope rather than up or down. Stop the mower, wait for blade stoppage, remove the key and battery packs before cleaning or changing accessories. Do not rinse the decks with a hose or liquids; wipe clean and store indoors. If your yard or storage routine cannot accommodate those limits, choose another machine or mowing arrangement.

Exact package codes deserve separate checks

The manual codes are body references, not interchangeable kit names: RY401260’s package names RY401026; RY401220’s package names RY401022; and RY401210’s package names RY401021. The RY401260 manufacturer page also conflicts internally on the 8Ah battery suffix and rapid-charger suffix, so only the 8Ah capacity and inclusion of a rapid charger are treated as settled. Confirm the exact carton if the accessory code or charger rating matters. These are manufacturer package claims, not product testing or price advice.
