Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Do you want a gas-powered zero-turn rider with a 50-inch deck?
This exact Cub Cadet is a gasoline, seated zero-turn with a 50-inch cutting deck. It is not a battery mower or lawn tractor.
Explore this need in the finder →Which rider control layout is essential for you?
The exact model uses a steering wheel with Synchro-Steer on a zero-turn chassis; it is distinct from a lawn-tractor wheel and from EGO e-STEER.
Explore this need in the finder →What minimum maker-listed slope limit do you require for the mower setup?
For mower-only side discharge or the separate mulch kit, the linked manual says to mow across slopes below 20 degrees, not up or down. This is the printed operating limit, not a promise that the same angle is safe on a specific yard. A grass catcher lowers the manual limit to 10 degrees.
Explore this need in the finder →Is a deck of at least 50 inches essential?
The exact product page lists a 50-inch cutting width. That is the deck cut width, not the mower full outside width; complete overall width is not published on the exact page.
Explore this need in the finder →Can your mowing plan use a separately purchased attachment, or must the deck cut by side discharge?
Side discharge is the standard deflector arrangement; the maker separately lists a 50-inch mulch kit and a 50/54-inch bagger. Choose side discharge for the base arrangement or select mulching/bagging only with the correct separate attachment installed.
Explore this need in the finder →Must a bagger or mulch plug be in the mower exact original package?
The exact page lists the 50-inch mulch kit and bagger parts separately, so neither is confirmed as included in the mower package. A required included attachment is not met.
Explore this need in the finder →The Cub Cadet Ultima Z2 50S is the steering-wheel version of the current 50-inch Z2 zero-turn. Its exact U.S. model number is 17CIGBYLA10. Synchro-Steer coordinates the steering wheel and front wheels, and Cub Cadet’s page describes its stability and control on slopes up to 20 degrees. This model is worth examining when you prefer a wheel over lap bars or need the higher maker-listed slope cap. It is not a conventional lawn tractor, and the higher number is not a promise that every hillside is safe.
What the S version changes—and what it does not
The Z2 50S uses a Kawasaki FR Series 691V twin rated at 23 HP and 726cc, a 3.5-gallon tank, a Hydro-Gear EZT 2200 hydrostatic transmission, and a fabricated 50-inch AeroForce deck with three blades. Its listed top speed is 7 mph forward and 3.5 mph reverse. The regular Z2 50 has the same engine displacement, rated output, deck width, number of blades and travel speed. You are not buying the S for a wider cut or more engine power. The key changes are the Synchro-Steer steering-wheel controls, front steering hardware and the different documented slope limit.
Synchro-Steer’s wheel is distinct from a lawn-tractor steering wheel: this is still a zero-turn format with dual hydrostatic transmissions. The exact specifications list a steering wheel, hand-lever parking brake, 13-by-6.5-inch front tires and 20-by-10-inch rear tires. The Z2 50 uses lap bars, integrated parking-brake behavior and smaller 11-by-6-inch front tires. Control preference should be tested in person if possible; the manufacturer’s description is not proof that a particular operator will find the layout easier.
The published slope limit is not a field guarantee
The Z2 50S page says Synchro-Steer provides four-wheel control and stability for straight-line mowing on slopes up to 20 degrees. The exact linked Operator’s Manual Form 769-27092 says to mow across slopes less than 20 degrees, not up or down, at low speed with no sudden turns. It prohibits mowing wet grass and says not to operate when traction, steering or stability is in question. The manual also limits use with a grass catcher to slopes no steeper than 10 degrees. The catcher limit is separate from the 20-degree mower limit and should control whenever a bagger is installed.
Neither the product page nor manual lists a rollover protective structure; the specification expressly says ROPS: No. Don’t interpret the 20-degree statement as a substitute for a ROPS, a site-specific safety assessment or sound footing. Stay well inside the manual’s threshold, and do not mow a slope if the surface, traction, visibility or control is uncertain. If most of your yard is flat and you are already comfortable with lap bars, the less elaborate Z2 50 may be the more direct fit.
Deck, accessories and cleanup
The 11-gauge fabricated steel deck provides 15 height settings from 1 to 4.5 inches. Three gauge wheels help control deck height over uneven ground; they do not remove the need to slow down and follow the operator manual. Cub Cadet’s claimed cut characteristics are manufacturer descriptions, not measured results. The page lists no deck-wash connection, no front-caster suspension and no cruise control. It does list a 20-inch high-back seat without armrests, an hour meter available separately, a tow hitch and dual-LED headlights.
The standard cutting arrangement is side discharge with the deflector correctly installed. Mulching requires the separately listed Flat Top Xtreme 50-inch kit, item 19A30050GFP. The product page lists a Double Bagger for 50- and 54-inch decks, item 19B70055100, and a separate ZS/ZTS/ZTXS bagger mounting kit, item 490-950-C062. Neither is included in the mower itself. A bagger adds the manual’s 10-degree catcher restriction, so a mulching or side-discharge plan may be a better fit where slopes are part of the job. Confirm the exact attachment code and all package contents with the dealer before purchase.
Service and operating habits
The page identifies a carbureted gasoline engine with electric key starting and a 12-volt lead-acid 230 CCA starter battery. The battery is for starting, not traction. The Hydro-Gear unit is described as maintenance-free and non-serviceable; use the specified dealer or service route for problems rather than treating it like an owner-serviceable transmission. The manual covers several models and warns that feature details vary, so use the exact identification code when ordering parts. It includes instructions for safe practice, slope use, maintenance schedules, cleaning and blade inspection; take time to learn the wheel-and-foot-control layout in a level open area before engaging the deck.
Cub Cadet lists three years of residential coverage with unlimited hours, plus lifetime-limited frame and deck-shell warranty terms. Commercial warranty is listed as unavailable. Confirm current written warranty terms and verify the individual unit’s model/serial status. This assessment does not establish serial-specific recall clearance.
Who should shortlist the Z2 50S?
Shortlist it if a gas, seated zero-turn, 50-inch fabricated deck and steering-wheel control match your route and routine, and the manual’s operating limits fit your terrain. If you require lap bars, select the Z2 50 instead. If you require a conventional lawn-tractor steering layout, choose a tractor-format comparison rather than treating this wheel as the same control system. A 20-degree minimum manufacturer-limit filter can include the Z2 50S; it will not include the standard Z2 50. But if bagging is selected, the actual supported plan drops to the 10-degree catcher limit, so a simultaneous high-slope and bagging requirement should not return this configuration as a match. Neither mower’s 50-inch cutting width establishes full outside width, acreage, bag volume or performance in tall grass. Measure access and consult the unit-specific manual before committing.
