A useful fit for

A straightforward 21-inch gas walk-behind for a homeowner who is willing to push and values the simpler HRN control layout. Honda’s exact U.S. page confirms a push-only PKA with the GCV170 engine, MicroCut twin blades, a standard bag and Clip Director routes for mulching, bagging or rear discharge. It is a coherent fit when the lawn is manageable to push and the owner is comfortable with fuel, oil, blade and seasonal storage tasks.

The main tradeoff

There is no powered drive, electric starter or Roto-Stop clutch. The mower weighs 73 lb dry and 76 lb operating on the product page; the linked manual gives 73.4 lb dry mass including the bag, a different basis. Honda marks the gas line discontinued, and the HRN216 decompressor notice requires a unit-level frame/engine serial check. Current condition, sale availability and remaining warranty cannot be inferred from the model page.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Do you want an operator-pushed mower rather than powered travel?

The exact HRN216PKA is push type; its supported mowing plans are moved by the operator.

Must this be a 21-inch gas mower with bagging available?

The exact page identifies a 21-inch GCV170 mower, a standard 1.9-bushel bag and a supported rear-bag arrangement.

Is recoil-only starting with a flywheel brake the combination you need?

The PKA starts by recoil and uses a flywheel-brake control that stops engine and blade together.

Will you require a confirmed unaffected recall status on the exact used unit?

Honda requires a frame/engine serial lookup for the HRN216 decompressor recall. The model code alone is not a clearance.

Choose it only if push drive suits the yard

The HRN216PKA is the push-only member of Honda’s HRN gasoline walk-behind set. Its value is a familiar gas mower arrangement rather than an added travel control: a 21-inch steel deck, Honda GCV170 engine, recoil starter and Honda’s three-route Clip Director system. If you want self-propel assistance, this exact code is the wrong HRN; the VKA, VYA and VLA add Smart Drive. If pushing is acceptable and your route has enough space for a 21-inch deck, the PKA keeps the control question simple.

Honda lists mulching, bagging and rear discharge with a standard 1.9-bushel grass bag. The manual’s Clip Director changes between mulch and bag positions; rear discharge uses the guard arrangement. The exact specification calls the discharge rear, not side. MicroCut twin blades and the steel deck are common HRN features, not proof of a measured cut advantage. Seven height settings span approximately 1 to 4 inches. A two-lever adjustment means set the front and rear in matching positions; choose the height for the grass and soil, not a promised lawn result.

What changes compared with the powered HRN versions

Without drive hardware, the PKA weighs less than the self-propelled VKA and the more featured VYA/VLA on Honda’s page. Honda lists 73 pounds dry and 76 pounds operating. Its 2021-and-later operator manual lists 73.4 pounds dry mass including the grass bag, so those numbers are not interchangeable. The difference is practical for lifting into a vehicle or moving across a slope; a push mower still requires the operator to move the full machine on the route. Do not treat Honda’s manual warning about slopes over 20 degrees as a safe-use target: it also says avoid wet grass, mow across a slope and retain firm footing.

The PKA has neither an electric-start button nor a blade clutch. Releasing the flywheel brake lever stops the engine and blade together. That is straightforward, but it also means restarting for a pause rather than keeping the engine running with the blade stopped as on the VYA. Choose the VYA if frequent bag-empty pauses make Roto-Stop a must, or the VLA if electric start is worth its extra weight and starter-battery upkeep. Choose the VKA if you need powered drive but not those extras.

Gas ownership is part of the fit

The matching manual says the mower ships without oil, even though oil is on its loose-parts list. Add oil and verify the dipstick level before the first start. It specifies unleaded fuel with pump octane of at least 86 and no more than 10 percent ethanol, a manual fuel valve, regular inspection and fuel-storage precautions. The manual also covers blade inspection, oil changes, air-filter and spark-plug care, cleaning, transport and storage. This is not a battery mower with a quick rinse-and-charge routine; plan for fuel and small-engine maintenance.

Honda’s current HRN directory labels gas-powered mowers discontinued. The exact page remains useful for identifying the PKA and its specifications, but it does not establish current stock, a current price or the state of a used example. Honda’s decompressor recall notice includes HRN216 machines: frame numbers in a listed range and some GCV170 engine serials require checking, and many units in the range are not affected. Ask the seller for frame and engine serials, verify repair status with Honda or a servicing dealer, and do not infer clearance from “PKA” alone. A model-level recall status is unknown until the particular unit is checked.

Who should keep looking

Do not shortlist the PKA if self-propelled drive, a Roto-Stop blade clutch, electric starting, leaf shredding, side discharge or a verified acreage minimum is essential. Honda lists no leaf-shredding route on this HRN and its page is not a yard-capacity promise. For confirmed current-reference gas-free alternatives, compare the battery HRN-BV or other current-reference push mowers; for another earlier gas HRN, consider the VKA only if Smart Drive is needed, the VYA for Roto-Stop, or the VLA for electric start. Each changes the control setup, not the core three-route mowing format.
