A useful fit for

For an earlier 21-inch gas walk-behind buyer who wants both Smart Drive and electric start. Honda describes the VLA starter as self-charging and the exact manual retains recoil backup. Its 3-in-1 deck and 1.9-bushel bag remain the shared HRN setup; unlike the VYA it uses a flywheel brake rather than Roto-Stop.

The main tradeoff

At 87 lb dry / 90 lb operating on the product page, it is heavier than the VKA. The manual gives 87.3 lb dry including the bag. Its starter battery has its own limited warranty and care instructions; it is not a maintenance-free start system. It has no Roto-Stop and remains a discontinued gas model with an individual HRN216 recall check required.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Is electric starting essential while keeping recoil as a backup?

The VLA lists electric and recoil starting; Honda calls its key-start system self-charging.

Do you also need Honda Smart Drive self-propel rather than push-only movement?

The VLA has variable Smart Drive; the PKA is push-only.

Must the blade control remain a flywheel brake rather than Roto-Stop?

The VLA uses a flywheel brake that stops the engine and blade together; it does not list the VYA’s Roto-Stop clutch.

Will you require a confirmed unaffected recall status on the exact used unit?

Honda requires a frame/engine serial lookup for the HRN216 decompressor recall. The model code alone is not a clearance.

Electric start is the VLA’s defining difference

The HRN216VLA combines a gasoline engine, self-propelled Smart Drive and electric starting. Honda calls the starter “self-charging”; the exact 2021-and-later operator manual also provides recoil backup and explains that a weak starter battery may recover after at least one mowing session using recoil, or may be charged with the specified optional accessory charger. This is not a battery-powered mower. Fuel and oil remain part of the routine, and the starter battery is a separate maintenance and warranty item.

Compare this control set with the other gas HRNs before choosing it. The PKA is push-only and recoil-start. The VKA adds Smart Drive but keeps recoil-only start and a flywheel brake. The VYA also has Smart Drive but adds Roto-Stop, letting the blade stop without stopping the engine. The VLA is the electric/recoil-start version with the flywheel brake; if blade-off pauses are more important than starting, the VYA is the relevant comparison. A named “electric start” should not be confused with powered blade operation or a battery-drive mower.

Shared deck and clipping choices

Honda lists a 21-inch steel deck, GCV170 engine with Auto Choke, MicroCut twin blades, seven cutting heights from 1 to 4 inches, and a 1.9-bushel standard bag. Clip Director routes are mulch, bag or rear discharge. Honda’s page does not list side discharge or the HRX models’ leaf-shredding mode. The bag and clipping setup help the VLA switch routines, but a 1.9-bushel rating is not a claim about how often your own lawn needs emptying.

Smart Drive offers five positions; Honda’s product page gives a 0–4.0 mph range. The VLA manual gives 0–4.11 mph. Keep the model-page and manual figures separate instead of making a fractional speed a buying threshold. Honda lists 87 pounds dry and 90 operating; the manual’s 87.3-pound dry mass includes the grass bag. Its 61-inch length and 22.6-inch overall width deserve attention if the mower must pass a narrow door or be stored in a short shed. Folding the handle does not make the entire deck narrower.

Setup, starting and used-unit care

The manual says the mower ships without engine oil and requires the oil level to be checked before starting. It specifies unleaded gasoline with pump octane of 86 or higher, no more than 10 percent ethanol by volume, and a 0.24-gallon fuel tank. Honda’s manual covers the fuel shutoff, fresh-fuel storage, blade inspection, oil change and maintenance schedule. It warns against wet grass and steep slopes over 20 degrees and says mow across, not up and down, a slope. A printed limit does not guarantee traction or make a slippery route safe.

The manual says the electric starter battery is charged during operation and can be recovered with recoil in the described circumstances; it also gives a battery warranty separate from the mower’s three-year residential page listing. For a long-idle mower, ask the seller whether the starter operates, whether the battery holds charge, and whether the optional charger was part of the sale. Do not assume a starter battery or mower warranty remains covered simply because the model page lists original warranty terms.

Honda labels its gasoline mower line discontinued. The VLA page identifies features but does not establish current production, current availability or a secondhand mower’s condition. It is also an HRN216 model covered by Honda’s serial-based decompressor notice. Honda lists a frame-number range and additional engine serials and says many in-range machines are unaffected; check the actual frame and engine serials and repair history with Honda or an authorized dealer. This review leaves recall status unknown for any individual VLA until that lookup is completed.

Who this exact setup fits

The VLA makes sense when recoil starting is an objection, but you still want a self-propelled gas mower and accept upkeep for fuel, engine oil and the starter battery. It is a poor choice if Roto-Stop is essential, if you need current-production status, or if gas storage and seasonal maintenance are unacceptable. Compare the battery HRN-BV for a current-reference Honda alternative, or compare the VKA and VYA if a used gas model has passed its condition and recall checks. The exact seller’s model label, manual and serial are more important than the shared HRN family name.
