Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Do you need a Roto-Stop blade clutch rather than the flywheel brake?
Honda identifies Roto-Stop on the VYA: blade rotation stops without stopping the engine.
Explore this need in the finder →Must the mower also be self-propelled with Honda Smart Drive?
The VYA combines variable Smart Drive and Roto-Stop; the PKA is push-only and the VKA/VLA use flywheel brake.
Explore this need in the finder →Will your route use the exact HRN bagging or rear-discharge arrangement?
The exact page lists Clip Director mulch/bag/discharge and a standard 1.9-bushel bag; no side route is documented.
Explore this need in the finder →Will you require a confirmed unaffected recall status on the exact used unit?
Honda requires a frame/engine serial lookup for the HRN216 decompressor recall. The model code alone is not a clearance.
Explore this need in the finder →Roto-Stop changes the pause routine
The HRN216VYA is the control-specific choice in Honda’s HRN gas walk-behind group. It combines a 21-inch self-propelled mower with Smart Drive and a Roto-Stop blade clutch. Honda describes Roto-Stop as stopping the blades without stopping the engine, which can be useful when a bag needs emptying or the mowing task pauses. That is a distinct behavior from the PKA, VKA and VLA flywheel brake: releasing that brake stops the engine and blade together. Never reach into the deck or treat the clutch as permission to handle the blade; stop and follow the owner’s manual for inspection, debris removal or service.
The VYA still starts by recoil. If you want electric start, that is the VLA’s distinction, not the VYA’s. If your priority is powered travel without the added clutch, the VKA has Smart Drive and recoil starting with a flywheel brake. The VYA is a better match only when blade-off pauses are an actual part of your routine. Honda does not describe it as a leaf shredder or a side-discharge model.
Shared HRN deck, exact discharge route
Honda lists the same 16-gauge steel deck, GCV170 with Auto Choke, MicroCut twin blades and three Clip Director modes: mulch, bag and discharge. The product-page specification identifies rear discharge as standard. Its bag is also standard, with 1.9 bushels capacity. Seven cutting heights cover 1 to 4 inches. These details make the VYA flexible for a homeowner switching between mulching and collection, but a “3-in-1” label is not evidence of side discharge or a leaf-shredding mechanism. Confirm the exact mower and any supplied parts rather than assuming the HRX system transfers to an HRN.
Smart Drive is Honda’s variable-speed control, with five positions and a 0–4.0 mph page range. The linked 2021+ VYA manual states 0–4.11 mph; Honda’s product page presents the rounded 4.0 figure. Neither number tells you how fast you will actually mow or proves a particular yard size. Product-page weights are 88 pounds dry and 90 operating; the manual gives 88.0 pounds dry including the bag. Measure storage, steps and loading needs against the actual mower rather than comparing only the cutting width.
What ownership asks of you
This is a gas mower, not a low-maintenance electric substitute. Its exact manual states that oil must be added before first use, specifies 10W-30 oil and instructs a level check. It specifies unleaded fuel with pump octane at least 86 and ethanol no higher than 10 percent by volume, and includes guidance for keeping fuel fresh. The manual covers maintenance and fuel-system care, blade inspection, storage and transport. It says to avoid wet grass and steep slopes above 20 degrees, mow across rather than directly up and down a slope, and remain attentive to traction. Treat those directions as cautions, not permission to mow a particular unsafe grade.
Honda’s current HRN pages label the gasoline line discontinued. A product page is still useful for identifying features but does not prove that a mower is still being made or that a used unit has warranty remaining. This model family is also named in Honda’s decompressor recall notice. Honda calls for the particular HRN216 frame serial and engine serial to be checked; some machines are affected, some are not, and repaired status matters. Before buying or using a VYA, get the frame number, check Honda’s lookup or ask an authorized dealer, and verify any recall repair. The fact record leaves unit status unknown rather than labeling every VYA recalled or clear.
When another HRN makes more sense
Choose the VKA if Smart Drive is enough and you do not need the clutch. Choose the VLA if electric start matters more than blade-off operation. Choose the PKA if push-only operation suits your lawn and avoiding powered drive weight is a priority. Choose a current-reference battery mower if discontinued gas equipment, fuel handling, or seasonal engine care is a poor fit. The VYA is the one to investigate when a documented Roto-Stop pause behavior is a must and the actual older mower passes serial, repair, condition and access checks.
