Honda HRR216PKA (K11) 21-inch gas push mower review

Earlier U.S. Honda HRR216 type PKA, specifically K11 serial band MZCG 1,140,001–1,999,999: GCV160 160 cc gas push walk-behind with recoil start, flywheel brake, six cut-height positions and Clip Director mulch/bag/rear-discharge routes. Confirm frame serial before applying the K11 assessment or manual.

A useful fit for

A simpler walk-behind arrangement for someone who is comfortable pushing the entire mower and wants the K11 PKA control set. Honda documents a 21-inch GCV160 mower, recoil start, flywheel brake and three clipping routes. It avoids powered-travel controls and their added mass, but the operator supplies the travel effort and still owns a gasoline engine.

The main tradeoff

The K11 PKA has no self-propel drive, electric start or Roto-Stop clutch. Its dry manual weight is 74.7 lb. Honda labels its U.S. gas mower line discontinued, and a model suffix does not determine a used unit’s condition, remaining coverage or recall status. Check its frame serial and service history; use the manual for that serial band.

Why the PKA is the uncomplicated HRR choice

The HRR216PKA is the push-only version in Honda’s late HRR216 family. The practical distinction is not a promise of a cleaner cut: it is that this model spends its complexity budget on a conventional gas engine and adjustable clipping route, not self-propel drive, a blade clutch or an electric starter. Honda’s K11 owner manual names the full configuration HRR216K11PKA and lists a 21-inch deck, a 160 cc GCV160 engine, fixed throttle, Auto Choke and a flywheel brake. It weighs 74.7 lb dry in that manual. If your usual mowing route is manageable to push and you are comfortable with an older small-engine mower, that is the simplest of the four PKA/VKA/VLA/VYA control combinations.

Honda’s selector lists the HRR216 Type PKA and provides different manuals by frame-serial band. This assessment uses the K11 manual for the MZCG 1,140,001–1,999,999 range, not every earlier PKA. The old product route is no longer an active specification page, so inspect the machine’s plate and match its serial to the right manual before relying on a part or adjustment. The selector image included here is the manufacturer’s type-level PKA render; its source filename says HRR21610PKA, so it is not evidence of a specific K11 unit or serial range.

What it can cut, and what the controls do

The K11 manual gives six cutting-height positions from approximately 1⅛ to 4 inches. Its Clip Director has a mulch position and a bag position; rear discharge is obtained by leaving the selector in bag position and removing the grass bag. A bag and its frame appear on the manual’s loose-parts list, but Honda does not give a bushel capacity in this model’s manual. The blade-control lever is a flywheel brake: release it and the engine and blade stop together. That makes the PKA a poor fit if you specifically want to leave the engine running while you pause or empty the bag; the HRR216VYA uses Roto-Stop for that distinct operation.

There are no powered wheels. This is a real effort tradeoff on inclines, long runs and frequent turns, not a small specification omission. If you want Honda self-propel assistance, look at the VKA, VLA or VYA. The K11 manual’s warning about mowing safely is more useful than treating the 21-inch width as a yard-size promise: it gives no maximum lawn area, and it cautions against wet grass. Measure gates and storage space using the whole machine, not only its cutting width.

Gas ownership, rather than a maintenance-free shortcut

The K11 owner manual specifies unleaded gasoline of at least 86 pump octane and no more than 10% ethanol, a 0.25-gallon tank, SAE 10W-30 oil, and 17 ounces of engine-oil capacity (the refill amount is smaller and varies with what remains in the engine). Honda says the machine ships without oil in the engine; check the dipstick and add oil before starting an unprepared mower. Fuel deterioration, air-filter care, blade inspection, oil changes and storage are part of owning this configuration. The recoil starter and Auto Choke remove a manual choke-setting step, but they do not eliminate old fuel, maintenance history or repair checks.

Honda now labels its U.S. gasoline mower line discontinued. That makes the PKA a reference for an earlier offer or an existing mower, not a claim about current production, dealer stock or price. When evaluating a used unit, ask for its frame and engine serial numbers, service records, and any applicable recall inspection or repair record. Honda’s recall page lists older mower notices by serial range; the model suffix by itself is not proof that an individual machine is cleared. A replacement engine can also change which number needs checking.

Who should choose another configuration

Choose this PKA only if manually pushing the mower is acceptable and recoil starting is fine. The VKA adds Smart Drive travel control but keeps flywheel-brake stopping and recoil starting. The VLA adds self-charging electric starting to Smart Drive while retaining a flywheel brake. The VYA keeps Smart Drive and recoil but adds the Roto-Stop blade clutch. All four K11 types share the 21-inch gas walk-behind format and three clipping routes; this suffix comparison is about controls and mass, not an inferred performance ranking. If gas storage and seasonal maintenance are what you want to avoid, the current Honda HRN-BV battery mower is a different operating plan. A current-reference replacement is a better fit when new-product support is essential.
