Honda HRR216TDA (K4) 21-inch three-speed gas mower review

Earlier U.S. Honda HRR216 HRR216TDA configuration, specifically HRR216K4, Type TDA, matched to MZCG frame serials 7,700,001–7,799,999: GCV160 160 cc gas walk-behind, self propelled drive, Three-speed gear drive with drive clutch lever and separate shift lever, mulching, bagging setup. Use the serial-matched manual; other type serial bands may differ.

A useful fit for

A serial-matched earlier HRR for an owner who wants self-propelled travel with three deliberate gear settings and standard bag/mulch equipment. The distinction is its separate shift selector and drive clutch, not a claimed lawn-size advantage.

The main tradeoff

The 83.1-lb dry K4 is an earlier gasoline mower with recoil start, flywheel brake and an optional—not assumed included—side-discharge chute. Honda’s manual gives no area, runtime or numerical slope rating. Verify frame serial, gears, bag, drive and recall/repair status; a TDA label does not establish a sound used machine.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Do you want powered travel with three selected speeds?

The K4 TDA manual lists three gears with 1.7, 2.6 and 3.2 mph listed ground speeds.

Do you want the standard bag/mulch setups?

The K4 type table lists a grass bag and mulching plug as standard; side discharge is optional.

Do you need the engine and blade to stop together?

The K4 TDA uses a flywheel brake; it is not the Roto-Stop type that can disengage the blade while the engine runs.

Must an individual used mower be confirmed unaffected by a recall?

Honda recall status depends on the exact unit and documented repair; the model/type alone does not confirm unaffected status.

Do you prefer a hand throttle lever with a CHOKE setting?

The K4 TDA manual shows a manual throttle lever with CHOKE and FAST positions.

A gear-shift HRR for owners who want a few deliberate travel speeds

The HRR216TDA is worth considering when you want rear-wheel assistance but would rather choose among three fixed gears than continuously vary speed with a thumb or pressure control. This assessment is deliberately narrow: Honda’s U.S. selector links a TDA manual for frame prefix MZCG serials 7,700,001–7,799,999, and that manual identifies the HRR216K4 type TDA. Do not apply these specifications to every mower wearing a TDA badge. Honda lists other TDA serial ranges with earlier documents; for a used machine, record the full frame serial and use the matching manual before identifying controls or ordering parts.

In the K4 manual, the drive clutch lever engages the rear-wheel transmission and a separate shift lever selects first, second or third gear. Honda lists approximate ground speeds of 1.7, 2.6 and 3.2 mph. First is the slow choice for thicker grass or close maneuvering; the manual describes third as useful for transport, while first and second are the recommended mowing gears. That arrangement is a genuine choice between a slow setting, a middle pace and a faster travel setting—not a promise that one pace fits every lawn. If you need to vary speed smoothly without pausing at a gear position, compare a documented variable-speed Honda type instead.

What the K4 TDA actually cuts

The manual lists a 21-inch cutting width and six approximate height positions from 3/4 to 3-1/4 inches. The specification table identifies the HRR216K4 TDA as a 3-speed, twin-blade mower with a grass bag and mulching plug as standard equipment. Honda’s instructions explain how to remove the plug and install the bag; using the plug selects the mulching setup. The manual also lists a side-discharge chute as optional for this HRR family. This review does not treat an accessory chute as part of the basic machine or count it as an included operating mode.

Honda gives a dry weight of 83.1 pounds, a GCV160 160 cc four-stroke engine, a 0.25-gallon fuel tank and 0.58-quart engine-oil capacity for the K4 frame/type table. The engine is recoil-started and uses a flywheel-brake control: releasing that lever stops the engine and blade, so the TDA does not offer blade-only stopping with the engine left idling. Its serial-specific manual—not a neighboring HRR review—should guide fuel, oil, blade and adjustment decisions. Honda’s published figures are manufacturer specifications, not measured performance on a particular yard.

Choose it for the controls, not for an acreage claim

The TDA is self-propelled, but it remains a walk-behind mower whose operator steers, sets the cut height and supplies judgment about swath and pace. The three gears can be useful if lawn conditions change between open stretches and denser patches. They do not establish how quickly this used mower will travel after years of wear, whether its drive cable is adjusted, or whether its transmission works properly. On a viewing, test each gear and the clutch release as part of a condition inspection rather than assuming the printed speeds still describe the machine in front of you.

Honda’s manual does not give a maximum lawn area, a runtime estimate or a numeric slope limit for this exact type. Do not use the 21-inch deck or 3.2 mph top listed gear to invent a yard-size rating. If your essential requirement is a bag already included, confirm that the frame, bag fabric and correct bag hardware are present; this K4 manual lists the bag as standard equipment, but an old machine may have lost it. A damaged or substituted bag can also make the listing irrelevant.

Earlier equipment means serial and condition work

Honda marks its U.S. gas-mower line discontinued. The TDA is therefore an earlier-model reference, not a current stock or price claim. Check the frame and engine identifiers, confirm that the model and manual agree, and inspect the deck, rear shield, blades, bag, starting behavior and drive before deciding whether a particular used example suits you. Check Honda’s recall/update lookup with the actual unit identifiers and ask for repair documentation; the type name alone cannot establish that an individual mower is unaffected.

For a more familiar fixed-throttle setup within the HRR group, compare the TKA K2. For one-speed assistance, the SDA has fewer travel choices; for push-only simplicity, the PDA removes the drive transmission. The TDA’s case is its three-position gearbox and documented HRR clipping hardware. If the serial band cannot be read, or the mower differs from the K4 configuration described here, pause and identify its actual version rather than transferring these specifications to it.
