Honda HRR216TKA (K2) 21-inch three-speed mower review

Earlier U.S. Honda HRR216 HRR216TKA configuration, specifically HRR216K2TKA, matched to MZCG frame serials 6,700,001–7,199,999: GCV160 160 cc gas walk-behind, self propelled drive, Three-speed gear drive with clutch and shift lever, mulching, bagging setup. Use the serial-matched manual; other type serial bands may differ.

A useful fit for

A K2 HRR for someone who wants three gear-selected travel speeds and Honda’s fixed-throttle automatic-choke arrangement, with the bag/mulch routes in the exact TKA owner manual.

The main tradeoff

The TKA is recoil-started and fixed-throttle; it does not offer variable drive or Roto-Stop blade-only stopping. Honda’s 83.1-lb dry figure, 21-inch deck and three gear speeds do not establish acreage, runtime or slope capability. This is a discontinued earlier mower; check serial, controls, bag, service history and unit-level recall/repair evidence.

Three-speed drive with an automatic-choke, fixed-throttle setup

The HRR216TKA is an earlier Honda gas mower for a homeowner who wants powered rear-wheel movement in three selectable gears and a relatively straightforward engine-control arrangement. Honda’s standalone owner manual identifies HRR216K2TKA, describes it as a 21-inch mulching/bagging mower, and lists a three-speed gear-drive transmission, flywheel brake, automatic choke and fixed throttle. The manual selector connects the TKA type to frame prefix MZCG, serials 6,700,001–7,199,999. Confirm that serial band before applying the K2 specifications; another mower that looks similar may have different controls or a different manual.

The gear shift gives three fixed travel choices. The K2 manual lists 1.7, 2.6 and 3.2 mph; its guidance recommends the first two for mowing and reserves third primarily for transporting the mower. The drive-clutch lever engages the transmission, while the flywheel-brake lever governs the engine and blade. A separate Roto-Stop blade clutch is not listed for this TKA, so releasing the flywheel brake stops both. It is not variable speed, cruise control or a self-adjusting pace. Consider whether a few set speeds match the shape and growth of your yard.

Bagging and mulching in a 21-inch walk-behind

The K2 specification lists a 21-inch cutting width, a height range from 3/4 to 3-1/4 inches, and a dry weight of 83.1 pounds. The manual describes a mulching plug and grass bag; these are the relevant documented clipping setups. Honda’s instructions explain how the bag and plug are installed, and recommend matching the cutting height across all four wheels. Do not assume that an older machine still has its original bag, that a replacement bag is sound, or that a serial-appropriate blade set is installed.

Honda specifies a 160 cc GCV160 four-stroke engine, a 0.29-gallon fuel tank and 0.58-quart engine-oil capacity for this model. Starting is by recoil; the automatic choke reduces the need to manually place a throttle lever at a choke position, while the throttle remains fixed. It remains a gasoline mower with exhaust, fuel storage, oil checks, blade care and seasonal storage. Those details distinguish its fixed-throttle setup from TDA manuals that describe an adjustable throttle lever, even though the two types share a three-speed gear concept.

Honda does not give this TKA a lawn-area limit, runtime figure or numerical maximum slope in the manual. It would be misleading to infer acreage from the 21-inch width or from the 3.2 mph transport gear. The operator must still assess grass height, obstacles, footing, bag condition and the safe route. A heavy, gas-powered walk-behind may be unsuitable if your priority is lightweight carrying, quiet operation or minimal engine maintenance.

Inspect the individual mower, not just the model label

Honda marks its U.S. gas mower range discontinued. This review explains a historical model configuration and does not establish current retail availability, price, warranty balance or the condition of a used TKA. Ask to see the frame and engine numbers, the K2 manual, maintenance history and proof of any repair. Test each of the three gears and the drive clutch, check that the flywheel-brake control shuts the engine and blade down correctly, and inspect the deck, blades, rear shield and grass bag before purchase. A product code does not establish that a worn transmission still delivers the listed speeds.

Use Honda’s recall/update lookup with the actual mower identifiers and confirm any required remedy; do not assume the type is unaffected. If the mower’s serial is outside the K2 range, the listed controls may not apply. The HRR family has a separate TDA type with a three-speed shift but a different manual/control generation, while the SDA uses one speed and the VXA uses variable-speed Smart Drive and a Roto-Stop clutch. Comparing these exact configurations is more useful than treating all HRR216s as one machine.

When this TKA is the reasonable match

Choose this earlier TKA only when a three-speed drive, the documented bag/mulch setup and Honda’s fixed-throttle/automatic-choke description align with your needs and you can verify that an individual machine is in serviceable condition. If you want the engine to continue running while the blade stops, choose a model with documented Roto-Stop instead. If you want to select a pace continuously, compare variable-speed models. For a current ownership plan with less engine upkeep, a current battery mower may be a better direction than chasing a decades-old sale listing.
