Honda HRR216K6VXA 21-inch Smart Drive mower with Roto-Stop review

Earlier U.S. Honda HRR216 Type VXA gasoline walk-behind, exact HRR216K6VXA configuration for MZCG frame serials 8,000,001–8,199,999. Honda’s selector links manual B250 across the broader 7,800,001–8,199,999 range; its parts catalog divides that interval into K5 (7,800,001–7,999,999) and K6 (8,000,001–8,199,999). Variable-speed Smart Drive, Roto-Stop, 21-inch cut, standard 2.4-bushel grass bag and mulching plug. Honda lists its U.S. gas-mower line as discontinued; condition and unit-level recall status remain unknown.

A useful fit for

A buyer identifying or evaluating an earlier Honda HRR216 Type VXA with MZCG frame serials 7,800,001–8,199,999 who specifically wants variable Smart Drive travel and Roto-Stop, and values its manual-listed 3/4-inch low cut. This is not a current-product recommendation.

The main tradeoff

The manual lists 97.2 lb dry, recoil starting and gasoline-powered upkeep. Honda advises avoiding slopes above 20 degrees; it gives no acreage or runtime claim. Used condition, current availability and unit-level recall clearance are not established. The K7 VXA uses a separate manual and its listed lowest cut is 1-1/8 inches.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Is a published lowest deck setting of 3/4 inch or lower important?

For the exact K6 VXA band Honda lists seven positions beginning at 3/4 inch; this is not a recommendation to cut every lawn that low.

Serial-specific Smart Drive and Roto-Stop

The VXA name covers more than one Honda HRR generation. This assessment applies only to HRR216K6VXA frame prefix MZCG, serials 8,000,001 through 8,199,999. Honda’s owner-manual selector links B250 across a broader 7,800,001–8,199,999 VXA band, but Honda’s parts catalog divides it: K5 is 7,800,001–7,999,999 and K6 is 8,000,001–8,199,999. The B250 specification table names K6. It is not a review of K5 or every HRR216VXA. If a used mower’s frame number does not fit the K6 subrange, identify it with Honda’s parts catalog and use the corresponding owner manual rather than carrying these specifications across.

Honda now labels its U.S. gasoline mower line discontinued. That makes this an earlier-model reference for someone identifying an existing mower or considering a used example—not a current new-product offer. The manual establishes the design and listed specifications, not the condition of any particular machine, remaining warranty, present parts availability, or an individual unit’s recall status. Confirm the full frame and engine identifiers, service record and repair history before purchase or repair decisions.

What the K6 VXA offers

The K6 VXA is a 21-inch, gasoline, self-propelled walk-behind with Honda’s variable-speed Smart Drive control and a Roto-Stop blade clutch. The manual lists a 0–3.8 mph ground-speed range at the stated engine speed; that is a published maximum range, not a promise that the mower will maintain one pace in every lawn condition. Its hand or thumb input allows pace changes; buyers who prefer fixed travel or selected gears may find another HRR control simpler.

Roto-Stop differs from a mower where releasing the blade-control lever stops the engine too. On this K6, Honda specifies a push-button Roto-Stop with a blade-control lever; the K7 also has a button, while an earlier VXA band uses a forward-moving lever. That distinction helps identify the right instructions and parts. The clutch can leave the engine running while blade rotation is disengaged, but a used clutch still needs to be tested.

Honda’s K6 specification table lists a 21-inch cut, seven cutting positions from 3/4 to 4 inches, a 2.4-bushel grass bag and a mulching plug. Bagging and mulching are the supported setups reflected here; do not assume an optional side-discharge accessory is present in a particular sale. The 3/4-inch lowest setting distinguishes K6 from K7. It is not advice to scalp a lawn; grass, soil and season still matter. The K7 VXA manual lists seven settings beginning at 1-1/8 inches, so the two serial ranges should not be treated as interchangeable on this point.

Size, fuel and care are part of the choice

Honda lists 97.2 pounds dry and a 63-inch overall length. Self-propulsion assists travel across the lawn; it does not make lifting into a vehicle, moving up steps or maneuvering in a tight shed light work. Check garage clearance, loading access and the operator’s ability to turn and control the machine before treating the powered drive as a complete answer to handling concerns.

The manual specifies a 160 cc GCV160 four-stroke engine, unleaded gasoline rated at least 86 pump octane, and a 0.25 U.S.-gallon fuel tank. Honda permits up to 10% ethanol (E10) or 5% methanol by volume with cosolvents and corrosion inhibitors, and warns against higher blends. It lists 18.6 fluid ounces of engine-oil capacity, while noting that a refill amount varies with oil already in the crankcase; owners should verify the dipstick rather than pour in the full capacity automatically. This is a recoil-start gas mower with ordinary small-engine fuel, oil, air-filter and spark-plug maintenance. If minimizing engine upkeep, exhaust or fuel storage matters more than keeping an existing HRR in service, compare a current battery mower instead.

For slope decisions, Honda’s manual tells operators to avoid steep slopes greater than 20 degrees and warns about traction and control on wet or uneven ground. Treat that as a documented operating boundary, not proof that a used mower is suitable for a particular hillside. Honda does not publish a maximum acreage or runtime for this configuration, so those needs remain unknown and should not be filled by the engine size, bag volume or drive-speed figure.

How it should match your answers

The K6 fits a shopper who explicitly allows earlier gasoline mowers and wants the combination of self-propelled Smart Drive, Roto-Stop, bagging or mulching, and a documented 21-inch cut. A request for the low 3/4-inch setting can distinguish this serial range from the later K7 manual. Selecting “current models only,” electric starting, a wider deck, or a different blade-control system should remove it from consideration. A request for a confirmed recall-unaffected machine cannot be satisfied from the type name: Honda’s recall process depends on the mower’s actual identifiers and completed repair history, so unknown status must remain unknown.

Within Honda’s HRR range, a K7 has a different manual and higher minimum cut; TDA/TKA use gear-drive layouts, SDA has one listed speed, and PDA is push-only. If the goal is to avoid gasoline storage and engine maintenance, compare a current battery mower instead.

Before buying a used K6, inspect its frame serial band, start and stop it as its manual directs, and have the drive, blade clutch, bag, deck and safety controls checked. Ask for repair documentation and use Honda’s recall/update lookup with the actual identifiers. Neither a type-level photograph nor a model description can show wear, hidden damage or repair status.
