Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Do you require a gas walk-behind with this exact travel arrangement?
The K11 VYA is self-propelled with Honda Smart Drive.
Explore this need in the finder →Must a 21-inch minimum and the documented bagging route both be available?
The exact K11 manual lists a 21.0-inch cutting width and Clip Director bagging; bag volume is not specified here.
Explore this need in the finder →Is separate blade disengagement with the engine left running essential?
The VYA K11 uses Roto-Stop; the PKA, VKA and VLA use flywheel brakes that stop engine and blade together.
Explore this need in the finder →Can this earlier model pass a requirement for a confirmed recall-unaffected individual mower?
Honda requires the actual frame/engine serial and repair status; the type/model itself has unknown unit-level recall status.
Explore this need in the finder →The HRR control for stopping the blade without stopping the engine
The HRR216VYA pairs Smart Drive self-propel with Honda’s Roto-Stop blade clutch. In the K11 manual, the full type is HRR216K11VYA; its feature list names a 21-inch mower deck, GCV160 160 cc engine, variable-speed transmission, Roto-Stop, Auto Choke and recoil starting. Dry weight is 90.8 lb. The main reason to choose it is the blade-control arrangement: hold the control to rotate the blade, and releasing it stops blade rotation while the engine can keep running. That is a real operational difference from PKA, VKA and VLA, whose flywheel brake stops engine and blade together.
Keeping the engine running during a short pause can save a restart after emptying the bag or moving between mowing sections. It is not a substitute for shutting down safely before inspection, blade work, clearing a clog or leaving the mower unattended. Follow the exact owner manual and never treat a disengaged blade as permission to reach under the deck. The VYA is not a lawn tractor or a commercial mower; the feature does not make it appropriate for every property or task.
Smart Drive adds propulsion; the mower still has to be managed
The K11 manual lists a 0–4 mph travel range and a pressure-responsive Smart Drive control whose position can be adjusted for operator comfort. You choose how much of the mowing job should be handled by powered wheel movement, then guide the mower around trees, beds and tight corners. Honda lists no lawn-area maximum. The VYA’s 90.8 lb dry weight is the highest in this four-type family, and it is still an awkward machine to lift or maneuver when drive is not engaged. That difference matters for stairs, vehicle transport and storage more than a headline speed.
Clip Director supplies the same basic three routes across the HRR K11 types: mulching, bagging, or rear discharge by removing the bag while the control remains in the bag position. The six height positions span about 1⅛ to 4 inches. Honda’s manual lists a bag and frame but no bushel figure here. It also specifies a gasoline routine: at least 86 pump octane, no more than 10% ethanol, a 0.25-gallon tank, and SAE 10W-30 oil. Before starting an unprepared machine, add oil and verify the level. Fuel storage, air-filter service, blade checks and seasonal storage are ordinary ownership work, not optional extras.
How it differs from the other suffixes
The K11 PKA is lighter and push-only. VKA adds Smart Drive but retains a flywheel brake and recoil start. VLA adds Smart Drive and self-charging electric start, also with a flywheel brake; its 89.9 lb dry weight is just below the VYA’s. VYA trades that electric-start system for Roto-Stop and recoil starting. The K11 manuals give these control combinations, so do not use a nearby HRN suffix as a proxy for the older HRR version. The HRR controls and engine are a distinct earlier generation.
Honda’s current U.S. navigation labels the gasoline mower line discontinued. The HRR manual selector remains useful for type and serial identification, but the old model route no longer provides an active sales offer. No current stock, price, warranty balance or used-unit reliability is claimed. The selector image is a manufacturer rendering for the HRR216VYA type; its source filename labels it HRR21610VYA, so it does not document a particular K11 serial range. Inspect the actual frame plate, confirm the correct manual, test the clutch and drive only as Honda directs, and ask for service history. Check any applicable recall using both frame and engine numbers; the model code is not a clearance result.
When the VYA is the wrong extra
Skip this model if you will not use the blade clutch, want the lighter push version, or need electric start. If your need is simply powered travel, the VKA has fewer of these added systems. If starting is your priority, compare the VLA. A current-reference battery mower is a better route when avoiding gasoline and older-machine service matters more than retaining the HRR’s control layout. For a documented model you can buy with current support, keep the finder focused on current-reference equipment and use this earlier article for identification or a specific offer only.
