A useful fit for

For a homeowner who specifically values two battery bays, Honda eSelect Drive, or powered transport with the blade off, while retaining the HRX family’s NeXite deck and leaf-shredding option.

The main tradeoff

The included 12 Ah pack is rated up to 45 minutes and Honda describes about 0.37 acre in its selector, both dependent on conditions; a second 12 Ah pack is optional. The 91 lb battery-free weight and roughly six-hour listed charge time on the included 2 A charger make storage and schedule worth checking.

The Honda HRX-BE is a 21-inch homeowner battery mower built around two battery bays and blade-off transport. This review is for the exact U.S. model HRX217YXBEXA6, which Honda lists with one included 12 Ah battery and a 2 A charger. Its important differences from the HRX-BV are not merely a larger pack: the HRX-BE has Honda eSelect Drive, electronic transport with the blade off, and an additional battery bay for a second compatible pack.

Battery layout changes the mowing plan

Honda rates the brushless motor at 1.5 kW and quotes up to 45 minutes with the included 12 Ah battery. The maker's selection guidance says a 12 Ah pack can cover about 0.37 acre of grass, depending on mowing conditions. Treat both numbers as Honda estimates rather than an area guarantee. Thick or tall grass, frequent turns, slope, cutting height, walking speed, and clipping choice can shorten a session. Honda says a second optional 12 Ah battery can add up to another 45 minutes and lists a maximum 24 Ah capacity. The second pack is not in the standard model package reviewed here; check that a seller has not substituted a different kit.

The included 2 A charger is listed at approximately six hours for a full charge. Honda lists an optional 8 A quick charger at about 1.5 hours. The quick charger is not described as included with HRX217YXBEXA6. If you have a long mowing day, calculate the likely charging pause and whether a second pack is worth storing and maintaining. The two-bay design is a meaningful advantage over the one-bay HRX-BV, but a second battery costs extra and adds weight to the operating setup.

Drive and clipping control

eSelect Drive is Honda's electric speed control, adjustable from zero to 4 mph. Its button-operated response is different from Select Drive's dial-and-engage control on the HRX-BV and from the Smart Drive control used on the HRN-BV. Honda also lists electronic transport with the blade off. That means the mower can move under its drive system without the cutting blade engaged, a useful capability for crossing a non-mowing section where the manual permits it. It should not be interpreted as a license to operate over gravel, around people, or on unsafe ground without following all manual precautions.

Like the HRX-BV, this model uses a NeXite deck, Honda's MicroCut twin-blade system, and a four-in-one Versamow setup: mulching, bagging, rear discharge, and leaf shredding. Honda specifies a 2.2-bushel bag and seven height settings from 0.75 to 4 inches. The Clip Director lets the operator change the clipping route; it is more useful to think of that as setup flexibility than as a promise of a perfect cut in all grass conditions. Leaf shredding can simplify fall cleanup when the lawn and leaf volume suit that method, while bagging remains available when clippings should be removed.

Storage, weight, and ownership

The HRX-BE weighs 91 pounds without its battery, folds for storage, and has a three-position handle-height setup. It is a heavier machine than the HRX-BV or HRN-BV before adding the included battery. If you need to lift a mower into a vehicle or move it up steps, compare the load and your actual route rather than focusing only on the cutting width. Honda lists a five-year residential mower warranty, 90 days commercial, three years residential coverage for the 12 Ah battery, and three years for the charger; review the applicable warranty conditions, especially if the equipment will be used commercially.

This is the best fit of the three homeowner models when the two-bay capacity, blade-off transport, or eSelect control is a real need—not simply because it is the newest-sounding trim. The HRX-BV costs less in capability: one 8 Ah bay, Select Drive, same NeXite deck, same leaf-shredding modes, and no blade-off transport. The HRN-BV is the simpler steel-deck alternative for a smaller or more straightforward mowing routine. The commercial HRC-BE is not a homeowner substitute; Honda explicitly targets it to landscapers and heavy use.

For each Honda battery mower, follow the exact model manual. The HRX family manual is shared across the relevant HRX-BV/HRX-BE family, but the product-page specification establishes the exact model code and package. The manual warns not to mow in wet or rainy conditions, advises avoiding slopes over 15 degrees, and says to remove the pack before servicing. Confirm the full code HRX217YXBEXA6, the 12 Ah battery, the 2 A charger, and the correct manuals before accepting delivery.
