Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Do you need Honda Select Drive variable-speed dial and engagement control on this exact HRX configuration?
Honda specifies Honda Select Drive variable-speed dial and engagement control for HRX217K6VKA; this control is distinct from the other HRX travel system.
Explore this need in the finder →Do you need Flywheel brake stops engine and blade together?
Honda specifies Flywheel brake stops engine and blade together on HRX217K6VKA; compare blade-control type rather than relying on the HRX name alone.
Explore this need in the finder →Do you require Recoil pull start only?
Honda specifies Recoil pull start only for HRX217K6VKA; verify condition and the individual serial-range manual.
Explore this need in the finder →The Honda HRX217K6VKA is the straightforward starting point in Honda’s final five-model HRX gas lineup: a 21-inch, self-propelled mower with recoil starting and Select Drive, without electric starting or Roto-Stop. Honda now labels its gas mower range discontinued, so this is an earlier model assessment, not a claim about new stock or dealer availability. The complete model code matters: the nearby VLA adds a key starter, while the VYA adds a blade-stop clutch.
The baseline: Select Drive and the flywheel brake
Honda lists the K6VKA’s GCV200 engine, fixed-gear belt-clutch Select Drive, and infinitely variable travel from 0 to 4 mph. The speed dial sets the maximum drive rate, then the control at the handle engages the rear wheels. That is a useful match when you want to adjust pace to your stride without choosing a hydrostatic-control model. It is not the same arrangement as the VLA or VYA only in engine starting or blade clutch: both keep Select Drive, so the main body of the mowing routine stays familiar across those three versions.
The cutting setup is more flexible than the model’s plain designation suggests. Honda lists a NeXite deck, twin MicroCut blades, a seven-position 3/4-to-4-inch cutting-height range, and the four-in-one Versamow system. Clip Director adjusts the balance between mulching and bagging; Honda also lists rear discharge and leaf shredding. A standard 2.5-bushel catcher supports bagging, though a larger bag does not remove the need to empty it when grass is long or damp. These are documented modes, not a promise that each will suit every grass condition equally well.
What this version leaves out
The VKA uses recoil start and a fixed throttle. Its flywheel-brake arrangement stops the engine and blade when the control is released; it does not let you pause the blade while keeping the engine running. If you frequently stop to move a branch or open a gate, the VYA’s Roto-Stop blade clutch is the meaningful alternative. If starting by key is the priority, the VLA adds electric start while retaining a recoil backup. Honda’s own specifications list the VKA at 89 pounds dry and 91 pounds operating. Those figures do not make a 21-inch gas mower light to lift into a vehicle; assess ramps, steps, and storage before relying on the mower’s wheel drive to solve every move.
Gas ownership is different from a battery mower even though the cut-width and mowing modes overlap. The operator manual requires the user to check oil and fuel, inspect the blades and fasteners, and follow the engine’s fuel-storage and scheduled-maintenance procedures. Honda’s manual specifies unleaded gasoline with an 86-or-higher pump octane rating and no more than 10% ethanol by volume for this engine family. It warns against steep slopes over 20 degrees and calls for mowing across, rather than up and down, a slope; damp grass can make footing unreliable. These are boundaries from the manual, not a claim that any slope below them is safe.
Recall and used-mower checks
Before considering a particular HRX217K6, check the actual mower frame serial number in Honda’s recall lookup. Honda lists an HRX217 (K6) range of MAMA-1484182 through MAMA-1734418 but warns that many units inside that range are not affected; the serial lookup or an authorized dealer is needed to determine a specific machine’s status. Do not treat the model suffix, engine number, or a seller’s statement as a completed recall check. If the mower is in the affected group, Honda’s instruction is to stop using it and arrange the stated inspection and repair.
Who should compare the VKA?
Choose this configuration when a self-propelled 21-inch gas mower with Select Drive, four documented clipping routes, and a simpler recoil/flywheel-brake starting and blade-control setup fits your routine. The VLA makes sense if you want its self-charging electric starter and accept the added weight. The VYA is the more direct comparison if blade-off pauses without shutting down the engine matter. For fine adjustment of ground pace through hydrostatic Cruise Control, compare the HYA; the HZA adds electric starting to that hydrostatic and Roto-Stop arrangement but is substantially heavier on Honda’s published dry-weight figures. All five K6 choices share a great deal of cutting hardware, so focus on the drive, starter, blade-control system, condition, and serial-number history rather than assuming a larger suffix means a better cut.
Honda’s current product page still documents the VKA but labels the gas range discontinued in its navigation. It lists a five-year residential mower warranty for the model; that original term is not automatically available on a used purchase, and the original coverage conditions and purchase date matter. Confirm the exact HRX217K6VKA identity, serial number, service history, catcher and discharge parts, and the correct serial-range owner’s manual before operating one.
