A useful fit for

A conventional gas lawn tractor with two-wheel drive and two-wheel steering, for a buyer who wants a selected 48A, 54 HC or 60 HC deck and does not need the X700 four-wheel-drive or four-wheel-steer layouts.

The main tradeoff

The 2025 U.S. base item 5812M is listed without a mower deck. X730 is two-wheel drive and two-wheel steer; the deck and any collection or mulching equipment must be selected separately.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Do you want a conventional steering-wheel lawn tractor with front-wheel steering and two-wheel drive?

Yes. Deere lists X730 as a steering-wheel lawn tractor with power two-wheel steering and a two-wheel-drive transaxle.

Explore this need in the finder →
Is full-time hydraulic four-wheel drive essential, or is two-wheel drive acceptable?

This exact 2025 base item is two-wheel drive, not the X738/X739 full-time HFWD layout.

Explore this need in the finder →
What deck width do you need, and is it acceptable to select the mower deck separately?

Deere lists 48A, 54 HC and 60 HC side-discharge deck choices, but the exact base item code is sold without a mower deck.

Explore this need in the finder →
Must the mower deck be included in the exact package you buy?

No. The 2025 U.S. base item code is a tractor without a mower deck; require a documented deck bundle if a deck must arrive with the tractor.

The John Deere X730 is the two-wheel-drive, two-wheel-steer gasoline member of this four-model X700 family. Its defining choice is not engine power: X730, X734, X738 and X739 share the same 25.5-hp Kawasaki EFI engine and K90 hydrostatic transmission. X730 is the straightforward fit if you want a conventional steering wheel and your yard does not call for the X738/X739 full-time hydraulic front-wheel drive or the X734/X739 four-wheel steering.

Identify what the base model actually includes

Deere’s 2025 U.S. specification lists the X730 under item 5812M as a Signature Series tractor without a mower deck. The same source lists optional side-discharge 48A, 54 HC and 60 HC decks. A product image or a dealer-configured X730 with a deck does not change what that base item number contains. If you need the mower deck in the purchased bundle, this reviewed 5812M configuration does not meet that condition; select and price the compatible deck separately with the dealer. Check the tractor and deck serials together before ordering a used or carryover deck.

The engine is the liquid-cooled Kawasaki FD750D EFI V-twin, rated by Deere at 25.5 hp with 745 cc displacement. The machine uses gasoline and electronic fuel injection. A 5.2-U.S.-gallon tank, K90 hydrostatic integrated transaxle, Twin Touch forward/reverse pedals, cruise control and differential lock are listed in Deere’s current product information and 2025 U.S. specification. That is a substantial garden-tractor setup, not a battery mower and not a zero-turn. The advertised engine horsepower and the tractor’s 8.5-mph maximum forward travel speed are manufacturer specifications, not independent performance results or a recommended mowing speed.

Two-wheel drive and two-wheel steering are the X730 distinction

The X730 steers the front wheels; the rear axle does not steer. It is also two-wheel drive. The 2025 listing pairs it with turf tires: 18x8.50-8 fronts and 26x12-12 rears. Those distinctions matter more than the shared engine: an X734 keeps two-wheel drive but adds power four-wheel steering, while an X738 adds full-time four-wheel drive but retains two-wheel steering. X739 combines those two changes. If tight tree groups are the main challenge, compare X734 rather than assuming the X730 can duplicate its rear-wheel steering. If traction on difficult ground is the essential concern, compare X738, but do not treat four-wheel drive as permission to mow a slope that is unsuitable for a ride-on machine.

Choose a deck by access and maintenance, not the tractor label

The 2025 U.S. spec lists a 48-inch 48A deck and 54- or 60-inch High-Capacity decks. It describes a 10-gauge shell for the 48A and 9-gauge shells for the 54 HC and 60 HC, each with a wash port. Deere describes the 48A as having wheels that rotate for deck removal and the 54/60 HC as drive-over installation. A wider cut can reduce the number of passes on open ground, but the deck width is not the tractor’s full outside width. Measure gates, a trailer, the storage opening and the turning area from the complete configured machine. Deere does not publish the complete dimensions or an acreage recommendation in the exact sources used here, so neither a gate fit nor a yard-size promise can be inferred from the cutting width.

The listed decks are side-discharge configurations. Deere lists separate mulching parts, including a 48A MulchControl attachment; 60-inch mulch components also appear in the 2025 X700 accessory list. A material collection setup requires a compatible deck-specific blower, chute, hopper and mounting hardware; the parts and ballast requirements vary. Those accessories are not part of item 5812M. If you choose mulching or bagging, match the exact deck year and serial number, and use the attachment-specific slope limit rather than carrying over a mower-only limit.

Read the slope section as a limit, not a promise

Deere’s North American operator-manual family for X730 and its related gasoline X700 models defines the basic configuration as the tractor with mower deck and no other attachments. It says not to operate that basic setup above 18 degrees; when using attachments, the manual’s ceiling is 10 degrees. The same safety section says to mow up and down a slope, not across, to go slowly, avoid starting, stopping or turning on a slope, and not mow wet grass. It warns that a printed cap does not remove the risk of rollover or loss of traction. A measured grade, uneven ground, wet turf or uneasy steering is a reason not to mow there, even below the number. Follow the manual matched to the actual tractor serial and the separately fitted deck or attachment.

When the X730 is the better comparison

Keep X730 on the list when you want a familiar steering-wheel tractor and do not need the extra steering geometry of X734 or full-time front-wheel traction of X738/X739. Move to X734 if the short uncut-circle figures for its 54 HC or 60 HC deck would help around obstacles; those figures do not mean the machine’s published 25-inch turning radius changes. Move to X738 if full-time hydraulic four-wheel drive is essential and two-wheel steering is acceptable. X739 is the one of these four that combines both. In the finder, a conventional tractor-wheel answer identifies all four, but selecting X730’s two-wheel steering and two-wheel-drive layout narrows the result to this setup. A deck-width minimum should be evaluated against the separately selected 48/54/60-inch deck, not treated as a deck included in 5812M.
