A useful fit for

A conventional gas lawn tractor that keeps two-wheel drive but adds power four-wheel steering; relevant when Deere’s published uncut-circle figures for the selected 54 HC or 60 HC deck fit the obstacle pattern better.

The main tradeoff

The 2025 U.S. base item 5822M is listed without a mower deck and remains two-wheel drive. Four-wheel steering does not replace a traction requirement or change the operator-manual slope limits.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Do you need a steering-wheel tractor with rear-wheel steering for closer deck tracking around obstacles?

X734 has power four-wheel steering. Deere separately lists the 54 HC and 60 HC uncut-circle radii as 10 and 6 inches; the exact result depends on the deck.

Is full-time hydraulic four-wheel drive essential, or is two-wheel drive acceptable?

This exact 2025 base item is two-wheel drive, not the X738/X739 full-time HFWD layout.

Explore this need in the finder →
What deck width do you need, and is it acceptable to select the mower deck separately?

Deere lists 48A, 54 HC and 60 HC side-discharge deck choices, but the exact base item code is sold without a mower deck.

Must the mower deck be included in the exact package you buy?

No. The 2025 U.S. base item code is a tractor without a mower deck; require a documented deck bundle if a deck must arrive with the tractor.

The X734 is the steering-specialist option among these four gasoline X700 tractors. It keeps two-wheel drive and the same Kawasaki EFI engine as X730, X738 and X739, but Deere specifies power four-wheel steering. That rear-wheel steering is the reason to compare it with the X730: the 2025 U.S. specification lists the same 25-inch turning radius for both, yet gives the X734 a much smaller uncut-circle radius with the 54 HC or 60 HC deck. Do not confuse this with four-wheel drive; the X734 is still a two-wheel-drive tractor.

The 5822M base item is a tractor without a deck

Deere’s November 2025 U.S. specification identifies item 5822M as “X734 Signature Series Tractor without mower deck.” The available 48A, 54 HC and 60 HC decks are separately chosen equipment. A current or older dealer machine may be configured with a deck, but that does not establish that the base 5822M listing includes one. This assessment therefore records the deck as not included and treats mowing as a real configuration only after a compatible deck is selected. If the exact purchase package must contain a deck, the 5822M base item fails that requirement until the seller documents a bundled deck and its identity.

The core powertrain is the same across this gas quartet: 25.5-hp Kawasaki FD750D EFI, liquid-cooled V-twin, 745 cc, gasoline, K90 hydrostatic integrated transaxle, Twin Touch pedals, cruise control and differential lock. Deere lists a 5.2-U.S.-gallon fuel capacity and a two-function hydraulic lift. The X734’s 2025 specification shows 18x7.00-8 front turf tires and 26x10.50-12 rear turf tires. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent tests of cut quality, fuel consumption or traction.

What four-wheel steering changes

Deere’s U.S. spec lists a 25-inch turning radius for both the X730 and X734. It separately lists the 54 HC X734’s uncut-circle radius at 10 inches and the 60 HC at 6 inches; the corresponding X730 figures are 32 and 28 inches. Those numbers describe an uncut circle under specific deck configurations, not the whole tractor’s turning radius or a guarantee that every tree can be circled without a second pass. The practical distinction is that the X734’s rear wheels participate in steering, which can change where the deck tracks in a turn. Measure the full tractor, deck and obstacle route rather than using the cutting width as the clearance dimension.

That distinction is most relevant when landscaping repeatedly leaves a ring of uncut grass around trees or fixed beds. If a conventional front-steering path is acceptable, X730 avoids buying a feature you may not need. If you need four-wheel drive because ground conditions demand added traction, X734 is not the answer: X738 pairs full-time four-wheel drive with two-wheel steering, and X739 pairs it with four-wheel steering. The Deere manual describes the X738/X739 hydraulic full-time drive as continuously engaged, with no operator control; it is not a selectable mode that the X734 can add later.

Deck choices and clipping setups remain separate

Deere lists the side-discharge 48A, 54 HC and 60 HC mower decks for this tractor family. The 48A shell is specified as 10-gauge steel; the 54/60 HC shells are 9-gauge steel and use a drive-over installation design, while the 48A deck has wheels that rotate for removal. Deck choice changes the cut width and some maneuvering figures. It also changes attachment compatibility, so a bagger or mulching kit should be selected by exact deck model and serial number. The 2025 X700 parts list shows mulch-control parts for selected widths and collection components that need a blower, chute, hopper, brackets and appropriate ballast. None of these separate accessories is included in base item 5822M.

A 48-, 54- or 60-inch deck is not a claim about acres handled in a given time. Deere does not publish complete machine dimensions or a verified acreage limit on the exact sources used here. If a gate, trailer, shed or narrow mowing strip is decisive, verify the configured tractor’s actual dimensions with a dealer before choosing the wider deck.

Limits for slopes and attachments

The North American X710/X730/X734/X738/X739 operator-manual family defines its basic setup as a ride-on mower with deck but without other attachments. It sets an 18-degree upper limit for that basic setup and a 10-degree ceiling when using attachments. The manual directs mowing up and down slopes, not across, and calls for slow, gradual operation; it also says not to mow wet grass. Deere warns that exceeding the recommended angle raises rollover risk. A four-wheel-steer feature does not alter the manual’s limit or make a questionable slope safe. If a collection system, weather enclosure or other attachment is fitted, use the lower applicable limit and the manual specific to the serial number.

How this changes a shortlist

Choose X734 over X730 when the measured uncut-circle difference for the 54 HC/60 HC choices is useful and two-wheel drive is adequate. Choose X738 instead if full-time four-wheel drive matters more than rear-wheel steering. Choose X739 if both features are essential. The finder can keep these requirements distinct: a steering-wheel lawn tractor choice fits all four, while four-wheel-steer and full-time-drive answers apply only to the relevant plans. A deck-width minimum applies to the deck selected separately; a requirement that the mower deck be included in 5822M rejects this base package. Confirm current regional availability too: Deere’s 2025 U.S. base-machine specification states these gasoline base models were not available for sale in California, while its live pages caution that regional availability can vary.
