Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Do you require the X700’s full-time hydraulic four-wheel drive but want conventional front-wheel steering?
X738 uses full-time HFWD with power two-wheel steering. The operator manual says HFWD stays engaged and has no operator control.
Explore this need in the finder →Is full-time hydraulic four-wheel drive essential, or is two-wheel drive acceptable?
X738 uses full-time hydraulic four-wheel drive; Deere says its HFWD stays engaged without an operator control.
Explore this need in the finder →What deck width do you need, and is it acceptable to select the mower deck separately?
Deere lists 48A, 54 HC and 60 HC side-discharge deck choices, but the exact base item code is sold without a mower deck.
Explore this need in the finder →Must the mower deck be included in the exact package you buy?
No. The 2025 U.S. base item code is a tractor without a mower deck; require a documented deck bundle if a deck must arrive with the tractor.
Explore this need in the finder →The John Deere X738’s defining feature is not its engine or cut width but its full-time hydraulic four-wheel drive (HFWD). It is the two-wheel-steer member of this gasoline pair: X738 combines full-time four-wheel drive with front-wheel steering, while X739 adds power four-wheel steering. X730 and X734 are two-wheel-drive tractors. That makes X738 a targeted comparison for a buyer who needs the X700’s continuous all-wheel traction but does not need rear-wheel steering for close trimming.
Separate the tractor from the mower deck package
Deere’s 2025 U.S. specification identifies item 5832M as an X738 Signature Series tractor without a mower deck. It lists 48A, 54 HC and 60 HC decks as optional side-discharge equipment. The mower in the product image may show a deck, but the image does not define what is in the base item. Confirm the exact tractor and deck codes, serial ranges and installed configuration with the seller. If the mower deck must be included in the exact bundle, 5832M by itself does not meet that requirement.
The engine is the 25.5-hp Kawasaki FD750D EFI, a 745-cc liquid-cooled V-twin using gasoline. Deere lists the K90 hydrostatic integrated transaxle, Twin Touch forward/reverse foot pedals, cruise control, differential lock, two-function hydraulic lift, 5.2-U.S.-gallon fuel tank and a 4-year/700-hour bumper-to-bumper warranty, whichever limit arrives first. The 2025 specification lists HDAP tires on both axles: 18x8.50-10 front and 26x12-12 rear. These source-listed figures do not establish a field-tested mowing speed, fuel economy or expected cut quality.
HFWD is always on, not a traction switch
The operator-manual chapter for the X738/X739 describes HFWD as continuously engaged, with no operator control. It explains that a special hydraulic-powered front axle and rear transaxle provide drive to all four wheels. Deere describes this as helping traction on difficult ground, but the existence of four driven wheels does not answer whether your yard is safe for a riding mower. Wet grass, loose or uneven soil, ruts, side slopes and tight turns remain real hazards. The manual still sets limits and calls for slow operation; it says to mow up and down slopes, not across, and not to mow wet grass.
The X738 has two-wheel power steering. The public X738 page’s broad copy mentions available four-wheel steering, but the model-specific U.S. specification says “Power Two-Wheel Steer” and the 2025 X738 row also identifies two-wheel steering. For this exact 5832M record, do not assume the four-wheel-steer system is installed. Deere lists X739 as the four-wheel-steer, full-time-four-wheel-drive counterpart. If the ability to reduce uncut circles around obstacles is as important as traction, compare that model rather than treating an X738 as an X739.
Deck size and collection are additional decisions
The 48A, 54 HC and 60 HC widths are separate deck choices. Deere specifies a 10-gauge shell for 48A and 9-gauge steel shells for 54 HC/60 HC. The 48A uses rotating deck wheels to assist removal; the high-capacity decks are described as drive-over installation. A 60-inch cut may suit open areas but the 60 inches describes the cutting path, not the full width of the tractor or clearance through a gate. Deere’s exact sources used here do not provide a complete configured-machine envelope or an acreage estimate. Measure your route and storage opening with the selected deck and ask the dealer to verify the specific model-year fit.
Side discharge is available with the selected deck. Deere also lists a 48A MulchControl attachment and 60-inch high-capacity mulch parts separately. Bagging requires a compatible Power Flow blower, chute, hopper, bracket and ballast setup selected for the deck and serial range. A mulch kit, deck or material collection system is not included with base item 5832M. When an attachment is used, the operator manual lowers its maximum slope limit from 18 degrees for the basic tractor-and-deck setup to 10 degrees with attachments. In the finder, a bagging plan therefore cannot use the mower-only 18-degree limit.
Where it sits beside the other gasoline X700s
Choose X730 if ordinary two-wheel-drive and two-wheel-steer operation is adequate and you do not need the additional X700 feature. Choose X734 if close-turn geometry matters but two-wheel drive is sufficient. X738 is the traction-oriented choice among these four; X739 combines its drive system with four-wheel steering. All four share the same listed Kawasaki power system, optional deck widths and K90 foot-pedal transmission, so those common specs are a poor reason to assume the models are interchangeable.
Setting a four-wheel-drive requirement in the questionnaire narrows the matching plan to X738 and X739; asking for front-wheel steering only then selects X738. Requiring four-wheel steering instead excludes it and points to X739. A deck-width requirement is evaluated against the separately configured 48, 54 or 60-inch deck. A package that must include a mower deck, bagger or mulch component should not match this less-deck base code unless the seller provides a documented bundle.
