A useful fit for

A conventional gas lawn tractor that combines full-time hydraulic four-wheel drive and power four-wheel steering; consider it only when both documented layouts address a real property need.

The main tradeoff

The 2025 U.S. base item 5842M is listed without a mower deck. Its attachment configuration has a lower 10-degree manual slope ceiling than the basic tractor-and-deck setup.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Do you require both the X700 full-time four-wheel-drive system and power four-wheel steering?

X739 is the gasoline member of this quartet with both documented layouts: full-time hydraulic four-wheel drive and power four-wheel steering.

Is full-time hydraulic four-wheel drive essential, or is two-wheel drive acceptable?

X738 uses full-time hydraulic four-wheel drive; Deere says its HFWD stays engaged without an operator control.

Explore this need in the finder →
What deck width do you need, and is it acceptable to select the mower deck separately?

Deere lists 48A, 54 HC and 60 HC side-discharge deck choices, but the exact base item code is sold without a mower deck.

Must the mower deck be included in the exact package you buy?

No. The 2025 U.S. base item code is a tractor without a mower deck; require a documented deck bundle if a deck must arrive with the tractor.

For this four-model gasoline comparison, the X739 is the only configuration that combines Deere’s full-time hydraulic four-wheel drive with power four-wheel steering. X738 has full-time four-wheel drive but two-wheel steering; X734 has four-wheel steering but two-wheel drive; X730 has neither added layout. Those are the X739’s meaningful differentiators. The four tractors share the same published Kawasaki engine, hydrostatic foot controls and choice of mower-deck widths, so comparing those common items alone misses the decision.

Start with the exact base item and deck

Deere’s 2025 U.S. specification identifies item 5842M as an X739 Signature Series tractor without a mower deck. The 48A, 54 HC and 60 HC decks are separately selected. A displayed mower with a deck is a product rendering, not evidence the base item includes one. Decide which deck fits the actual mowing route, then confirm its model and serial compatibility with the tractor. If the deck must be part of the exact package, item 5842M alone does not pass that test.

The engine is listed as a 25.5-hp Kawasaki FD750D EFI, a 745-cc liquid-cooled V-twin on gasoline. Other published equipment includes the K90 hydrostatic integrated transaxle, Twin Touch forward/reverse pedals, cruise control, differential lock, two-function hydraulic lift, 5.2-U.S.-gallon fuel capacity and 4-year/700-hour bumper-to-bumper warranty. Deere’s 2025 spec lists 18x8.50-10 front and 26x12-12 rear HDAP tires. These are manufacturer-listed features, not independently measured results or a guarantee of traction on a particular lawn.

Four-wheel steering and four-wheel drive solve different needs

HFWD is a continuous hydraulic drive system, not a switch the operator turns on for one hill. Deere’s manual says it remains engaged and has no operator control; the source describes the system as supporting traction on difficult ground. X739 also has power four-wheel steering. The 2025 U.S. spec lists a 25-inch turning radius and, for its 54 HC and 60 HC deck configurations, uncut-circle radii of 10 inches and 6 inches. Those smaller uncut-circle figures can matter where a deck must pass around trees or fixed landscape features. They do not mean the tractor occupies only 25 inches of space, nor guarantee a single pass around every obstacle.

If your essential need is only a tight mowing path, compare X734’s four-wheel steering without adding a drive system you do not need. If traction is the primary need but rear-wheel steering is not, compare X738. X739 makes sense when both documented layouts matter to the job. Its front and rear HDAP tires differ from the turf tires listed for X730/X734, but tire type does not negate the manual’s warnings about wet grass, slope angles and uncertain stability. Ask the dealer to verify actual tire configuration for the unit being offered.

Choose mowing mode as an accessory configuration

Deere lists 48A (48 inches), 54 HC and 60 HC side-discharge mower decks. The 48A deck shell is listed as 10-gauge steel and the 54/60 HC shells as 9-gauge. The 48A deck uses rotating wheels for removal; the 54/60 HC use a drive-over installation approach. A larger cutting width may reduce overlap on open ground, but the number is not the machine’s total outside width. Deere does not publish complete overall dimensions or an acreage limit in the exact sources used here. Check gates, trailer width, storage clearance, surface and turn space with the full selected configuration.

The 2025 X700 parts list shows specific 48A and 60-inch mulching components and separate Power Flow material-collection parts. A bagging system needs compatible deck-specific blower, chute and hopper components, plus mounting hardware and any stated ballast. Those parts are not included in the 5842M base item, and the available fit can depend on the deck serial. A mower-only slope limit must not be carried into an attachment plan.

Respect the operator manual’s two slope limits

Deere’s North American operator-manual family for X730/X734/X738/X739 describes an 18-degree ceiling for the basic lawn-tractor configuration: mower deck fitted, no additional attachments. With attachments, the manual states a 10-degree maximum. It also says to mow up and down slopes, not across; go slowly; avoid starting, stopping or turning on a slope; and do not mow wet grass. The manual describes risk rising as the terrain approaches its cap. These are limits, not a guarantee that any specific hill is safe. Do not operate where traction, steering or stability is uncertain, and use the instructions matched to the actual tractor and attachment serials.

Use the questionnaire to avoid a feature mismatch

A gas, ride-on, lawn-tractor answer identifies this as the right format; a four-wheel-drive answer narrows the fit to X738/X739, while a four-wheel-steer answer narrows it to X734/X739. Requiring both selects X739 among these four. A 54-inch minimum deck can use the 54 or 60-inch plan, but the deck is a separate purchase from item 5842M. Requiring an included mower deck, bagger or mulch attachment rejects the base package unless a seller documents a bundled configuration. If the job includes collection equipment, the finder uses the 10-degree attachment cap rather than the 18-degree basic mower cap.
