A useful fit for

A diesel steering-wheel tractor for a buyer who wants power four-wheel steering and accepts the specified two-wheel-drive layout. Deere publishes smaller uncut-circle figures for the 54 HC and 60 HC decks than it lists for the two-wheel-steer diesel tractors.

The main tradeoff

Four-wheel steering is not four-wheel drive: the X754 remains two-wheel drive and is specified with turf tires. Item 5864M does not include a mower deck; deck and attachment compatibility must be checked for the actual serials.

Your needs, this model

Does this model have a diesel engine?

Diesel is explicitly listed for base item 5864M, while a gas-only answer must not include this diesel engine.

The John Deere X754 is the X700 diesel choice that adds power four-wheel steering while keeping two-wheel drive. Its closest diesel comparisons share the same 24-hp liquid-cooled engine: the X750 has two-wheel steering, and the X758 has two-wheel steering with full-time four-wheel drive. Those are independent design choices. Four-wheel steering changes the tractor’s path around an obstacle; it does not add driven front wheels.

Understand the 5864M package first

Deere’s May 2026 U.S. specification identifies base item 5864M as an X754 Signature Series tractor without a mower deck. It lists compatible 48A, 54 HC and 60 HC side-discharge mower decks as separate choices. Deere’s product rendering displays a mower deck, but the image does not change the contents of the deckless base item. When comparing a dealer listing or used machine, verify the item code and written equipment list. If a deck is included in a special bundle, it should be itemized separately and checked against the tractor’s serial number.

The published engine is a 24-hp, 60.6-cu-in. (993-cc) 3TNM74F, a liquid-cooled three-cylinder diesel with cast-iron liners. Deere specifies a K90 hydrostatic transmission, Twin Touch pedals, cruise control and differential lock. The X754 is power four-wheel steer but two-wheel drive. Deere lists a 25-inch turning radius; for the 54 HC and 60 HC decks, the specification also gives 10- and 6-inch uncut-circle radii. These are manufacturer geometry figures for stated deck combinations, not a promise that the tractor can finish every corner without repositioning. They are more useful than a vague claim of “easy turning” because they help explain why the rear-steering layout differs from the X750.

When rear-wheel steering helps

If your route winds among landscaping beds, trees or other close obstacles, the X754 is the diesel X700 to compare against the conventional-steering X750. Four-wheel steering can change the track of the rear wheels in a turn; Deere’s deck-specific uncut-circle figures are the concrete comparison available here. Measure the yard and consider the operator’s turning routine rather than assuming a catalog dimension solves every obstacle. A 48-inch, 54-inch or 60-inch cutting deck is still a separately chosen configuration, and the actual outside width and turning clearance depend on the installed deck and the complete setup.

The X754 does not have the X758’s full-time four-wheel-drive layout. Deere lists turf tires—18x7.00-8 at the front and 26x10.50-12 at the rear—and two-wheel drive. If you want the documented full-time four-wheel-drive model, the X758 is the relevant comparison; if you need rear-wheel steering and can work with two-wheel drive, the X754 is the exact configuration. Neither distinction provides a safe-slope guarantee. Avoid inferring safe operation on wet or steep terrain from the presence of four-wheel steering, differential lock or a particular tire pattern.

Decks and clippings remain separate decisions

The 48A deck uses a 10-gauge shell; the 54 HC and 60 HC use 9-gauge steel shells. Deere describes the 48A as having mower wheels that rotate for easier removal, while the High-Capacity decks use drive-over installation. The specs identify the listed decks as side-discharge. Deere also lists compatible mulch-control components and a deck-specific Power Flow collection system, but those parts are separate from base item 5864M. Bagging in particular can require a compatible deck blower, chute, hopper, mounting bracket and ballast; compatibility depends on the exact deck and model-year details. Confirm the complete parts list with Deere rather than assuming the tractor image includes the accessories.

There is no confirmed slope rating or full configured width in the exact sources used for this assessment. Obtain the current operator’s manual for the tractor’s serial and selected deck/attachments before deciding whether a grade or transport path is appropriate. Treat the manual’s safety instructions as requirements, not as a performance promise. Also check the tractor/deck serial combination when purchasing a used deck or older bagger components; the X700 accessory pages include model-year and part-specific limitations.

How the X754 fits a shortlist

Shortlist the X754 when the diesel engine and power four-wheel steering are both requirements, and when two-wheel drive is acceptable. Select it over the X750 only when the steering geometry answers a real yard-layout need; the two models share the stated engine family but not the steering layout. Select it over the X758 when you prefer the X754’s four-wheel steering and do not require full-time four-wheel drive. If your condition is the X758’s traction layout, the X754 should not pass merely because its name also contains a “four.”

In a mower finder, diesel plus four-wheel steering plus two-wheel drive is the combination that isolates the X754 among the three diesel X700 base tractors. Selecting a minimum compatible deck width tests the separate deck plan; setting “deck must be included” excludes this exact deckless item. If the quote includes a deck, treat that as a separately verified configured bundle, not as a fact about the 5864M base code. Check the current dealer quote, written warranty and operator manual for the actual tractor before committing.
