Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Is rear-wheel self-propelled travel essential?
The RY401018 body uses rear-wheel self-propulsion; a push-only requirement excludes it.
Explore this need in the finder →Must the exact purchase include a battery and charger?
No: this BTL configuration is tool-only. It can suit an owner with compatible 40V power, but an included-pack requirement rules it out.
Explore this need in the finder →Is rear bagging a required clipping route?
The body manual documents bagging, mulching and side discharge as separate setups; a rear-discharge-only requirement is not documented.
Explore this need in the finder →Is the 20-inch cutting width enough for your access and pass-count tradeoff?
The exact body has a 20-inch deck; a 21-inch minimum excludes it.
Explore this need in the finder →RYOBI RY401018BTL is the tool-only purchase code for a 20-inch, 40V HP Brushless self-propelled mower built around mower body RY401018. RYOBI’s exact U.S. page says the package includes the mower, grass catcher, start key, mulch plug, side-discharge chute and manual, with no battery or charger. The RY401180 is the corresponding package that adds a 6Ah battery and charger. That body-versus-bundle distinction should guide a search or store pickup: a 40V label does not mean the pack is included.
Powered rear-wheel drive, with a manual speed adjustment
The RY401018 differs from the 20-inch RY401017 push body in the wheel drive. This one is self-propelled with rear-wheel drive, so the motor advances the mower when the drive controls are engaged. The operator manual identifies a sliding cruise-control button that sets travel speed to a pace the operator can comfortably follow. It warns that the speed should be adjusted before blade engagement and should not be set faster than a safe walking pace. This is not RYOBI Smart Trek and it is not Honda Hydrostatic Cruise Control; the manual describes a separate control and the two should not be conflated in a comparison.
The manual specifies a 20-inch deck and seven cutting heights from 1.5 to 4 inches; the exact product specifications list 42.8 pounds for the mower, without clarifying battery basis. The figure is not a promise about the weight you will lift with a battery installed. Handles fold for upright storage. Measure the whole route to the lawn and storage space before buying, because a nominal cutting width says nothing about handle clearance, turning room or the machine’s overall dimensions.
Tool-only is useful only when the rest of the system is accounted for
RYOBI’s page claims up to 40 minutes and an ideal lawn of up to one-half acre using a 40V 6Ah battery. The RY401018BTL box does not include that battery or a charger. A buyer who already owns compatible RYOBI 40V equipment can consider the bare tool without paying twice for kit parts; a first-time buyer should compare the complete RY401180 kit and account for the included power source. The runtime figure is a manufacturer maximum, not a measured result or guarantee: grass height, density, moisture, cutting height, slope, route and whether travel drive is engaged all affect actual work completed.
The RY401018 body has one active battery port and a separate storage compartment that can hold an extra pack. The manual explicitly distinguishes the storage compartment from the powered port; a pack stored there does not run the mower. So do not treat a spare carried on board as a second active port or infer that it automatically switches batteries. If the yard is near the maker’s half-acre reference, set a realistic pace and mowing schedule rather than assuming the maximum claim will always cover the route.
Three documented clipping setups and a careful slope limit
The manual lists mulching with the plug, rear bagging with the catcher, and side discharge with its chute. Each requires a different fitting, and the mower must be stopped and isolated with its battery and key removed before the operator changes attachments, empties the bag or clears debris. The instructions recommend avoiding wet grass, raising the cut or narrowing the pass in tall or thick growth, and cleaning the underside after use. Keep hands away from the blade and let it stop completely before working near the deck.
For slope work, RYOBI says not to operate above 15 degrees and to mow across the face rather than straight up or down. The manual also advises not to mow if footing is uncertain and to stay away from drop-offs. Self-propulsion does not cancel those warnings: powered drive is not a manufacturer-rated terrain capability. If your route is steep, damp, rutted or exposed, treat those conditions as a reason to select a different safe arrangement instead of using drive to justify it.
Choose this code if the bundle fits your existing tools
RY401018BTL can suit someone who wants rear-wheel drive and the three documented clipping routes, but already has the compatible 40V battery and charger. It is not a cheaper complete kit if you still need both. The RY401180 supplies a 6Ah pack and charger with the same 20-inch self-propelled family; the operator should compare that package with the separate 20-inch push kit RY401170 if powered travel is not essential. RYOBI’s newer RY40HPLM07 has its own specifications and package options; do not transfer its runtime or equipment details to this exact RY401018 SKU. No purchase price or measured mowing result is used here.
