Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Is rear-wheel self-propelled travel essential?
The RY401018 body uses rear-wheel self-propulsion; a push-only requirement excludes it.
Explore this need in the finder →Must the exact purchase include at least one battery pack?
This kit lists one 40V 6Ah battery; a two-pack minimum excludes this one-pack package.
Explore this need in the finder →Is rear bagging a required clipping route?
The body manual documents bagging, mulching and side discharge as separate setups; a rear-discharge-only requirement is not documented.
Explore this need in the finder →Is the 20-inch cutting width enough for your access and pass-count tradeoff?
The exact body has a 20-inch deck; a 21-inch minimum excludes it.
Explore this need in the finder →RYOBI RY401180 is a 20-inch 40V HP Brushless self-propelled mower kit: its exact U.S. product page identifies mower body RY401018 and lists one 6Ah battery and a fast charger with the catcher, start key, mulch plug, side-discharge chute and manuals. It is not the same purchase as RY401018BTL, the tool-only code. The underlying mower is rear-wheel-drive and self-propelled in both configurations, but only this kit page establishes an included battery and charger. If those are already on your shelf, the bare tool may suit; if not, selecting the correct package avoids an unpleasant surprise at setup time.
A 20-inch cut with powered travel
RY401018’s manual describes a 20-inch cutting deck, 40V DC motor, seven height positions between 1.5 and 4 inches, and an operator-controlled rear-wheel self-propelled system. The exact product page lists mower weight as 42.8 pounds; it does not specify whether that figure includes a battery, so it is not an all-in carry-weight promise. The handle folds for compact upright storage. Before choosing a wider path than a small compact mower, check the gate and shed route rather than measuring only the lawn.
The self-propelled control is important to the operating plan. The manual says a sliding cruise-control button adjusts travel speed and cautions the user to select a pace they can comfortably follow. Set it before engaging the blade; a setting that outruns your walking pace can make the mower difficult to control. It is not a speed-free autonomous drive and it does not make an unsafe slope suitable. Compare this with RYOBI’s 20-inch push model if you prefer to steer and supply all movement yourself.
One battery, one active port, a conditional runtime claim
The kit includes one 40V 6Ah battery and a fast charger. RYOBI’s product page describes up to 40 minutes and says the mower is ideal for up to one-half acre using a 6Ah pack. These are manufacturer maximum and fit statements, not results from an independent test, and not an assurance that a half-acre lawn can be cut in any condition on one charge. Thick growth, a low height setting, side discharge or bagging stops, moisture, repeated turns and use of wheel drive can all affect the result. The relevant comparison with the RY401170 push kit is the package’s same 6Ah class and the separate runtime claims: the self-propelled RY401180 page gives 40 minutes versus 45 minutes for the push kit. That is not an efficiency guarantee for a particular route.
The mower has one active battery port plus a separate storage space for carrying another pack; the manual says a battery in storage is not powering the machine. This is not a two-port system. If you require two packs to be included, one 6Ah pack does not meet that package requirement. If you already own compatible 40V packs, compare them with the kit before buying; the tool-only RY401018BTL does not supply a charger or battery.
Choose the clipping route to suit the job
RY401018’s manual and package contents document mulching, rear bagging and side discharge. The plug, catcher and chute are switched as separate configurations; they are not simultaneous outputs. For mulching, use the plug and mow dry grass at a height suited to its growth. For bagging, fit the catcher and plan to stop safely to empty it. For side discharge, install the chute and keep the discharge away from people, paths and objects that can cause debris to rebound. RYOBI’s manual says to stop, wait for blade motion to end, remove the start key and take out the battery before changing attachments, emptying the catcher, clearing a blockage or cleaning under the deck.
The manual sets a maximum slope of 15 degrees, says to mow across the face, never directly uphill or downhill, and advises the operator not to mow when footing is uncertain. That is a safety limit in the instructions, not an assurance of traction at the limit. Avoid wet ground, clear obstacles and store the mower indoors and dry. The battery cover should remain closed during use; do not hose the deck.
When RY401180 is the better package
Choose this kit if self-propelled rear-wheel drive is essential, you want a 20-inch mower with all three manual-documented clipping routes, and a new 6Ah battery plus charger is useful. Choose RY401018BTL if you already have compatible RYOBI 40V equipment and want the same general self-propelled arrangement without kit power parts. If powered travel is unnecessary, RY401170 is a push kit with the same nominal width, 6Ah battery class and a longer maker-stated runtime maximum; if you want CrossCut multi-blade hardware, compare another exact model such as RY401260. The product image is a manufacturer rendering, not a record of hands-on testing or a complete carton.
