A useful fit for

A push-only single-blade 21-inch mower kit with one 8 Ah pack and charger for a buyer who prefers a straightforward battery package.

The main tradeoff

It lacks self-propelled drive and CrossCut, and one 8 Ah pack is not automatically more runtime than another battery arrangement. Up to 55 minutes and up to one-half acre are maker estimates, not a yard guarantee.

The RY40HPLM05K is the push-only, single-blade kit in this 21-inch RYOBI 40V HP family. Unlike the 04K2, it does not use the CrossCut multi-blade arrangement. Unlike the 01K2, it has no powered drive. The package is also distinct: RYOBI lists one 8.0 Ah battery and a fast charger, rather than two 6 Ah batteries. That mix makes it important to compare actual package needs and mower operation, not the number of batteries alone.

A simpler push mower package

The 21-inch deck and push-only travel suit a buyer who wants to choose the mower’s pace directly and does not need self-propelled assistance. The page lists a composite deck, one active battery port, a grass bag, start key, side-discharge chute and integrated mulch plug. The single rotary blade is the familiar configuration of the 01-series. Mulching, bagging and side discharge provide flexibility for ordinary clipping management, although exact attachment fit should always be checked against the delivered package and manual.

One 8 Ah battery is supplied. RYOBI advertises up to 55 minutes of runtime and up to one-half acre. These are maximum estimates from the maker, not guaranteed coverage. A larger nominal-capacity pack does not by itself prove longer work time than a two-pack configuration: blade system, grass, cut height, pace, temperature and pack condition matter. This mower has one active battery port, so the straightforward plan is one included pack and a recharge when needed, rather than assuming the mower will rotate two active packs onboard. The 55-minute claim should be viewed as context, not a measured lawn result.

Why compare the 04K2?

The 04K2 is also push-only and arrives with a charger, but it is a CrossCut mower with two 6 Ah batteries and two active ports. If CrossCut is the hard requirement, the 05K does not satisfy it merely because the shared product family advertises multi-blade models. If a simpler single-blade system is preferred, the 05K avoids that extra blade arrangement. The 04K2, 02K2 and 03K2 all have CrossCut; the 02K2 adds rear-wheel self-propel, while the 03K2 adds AWD. The 01K2 is the rear-drive single-blade alternative, supplied with two 6 Ah batteries rather than one 8 Ah pack.

The manufacturer compares the 05K’s power with a 196cc gas mower. That is not an independent performance test and does not establish cutting results in any specific grass. Check the mowing route, terrain and physical effort honestly: a push machine may be simple, but a long lawn can make powered drive valuable. No maximum slope or water-resistance value is inferred from the product page.

Care and storage

RYOBI lists a folding handle and vertical storage. Use the exact RY40HPLM05 manual for storage position, battery removal, cutting height and blade-service instructions. Remove the battery and key before maintenance or clearing the underside, wait for the blade to stop and never place hands under the deck. Follow the manufacturer’s wet-grass and slope precautions; a consumer product description is not a terrain rating. The mower should be used to maintain lawn grass, not brush or rough vegetation outside its intended cutting conditions.

The manufacturer lists a five-year tool warranty and three-year battery warranty. Confirm the current terms, registration requirements and model/serial match for the actual purchase. Existing RYOBI 40V tools may make the battery ecosystem attractive, but this particular K configuration already includes one pack and charger, so another battery is not needed merely to begin mowing. If you need a second pack, check charging and compatibility before choosing it for runtime.

Best fit

Choose the 05K when you want a 21-inch push mower, single-blade configuration and a kit containing an 8 Ah pack and charger. It is a weaker fit when self-propelled travel is essential, when you need two batteries included, or when CrossCut is the reason for shopping this set. If a more complete dual-pack push mower is appealing, compare the CrossCut 04K2. If assisted travel matters, compare the single-blade 01K2 or CrossCut 02K2; if AWD is necessary, consider the 03K2, but do not assume all-wheel drive establishes a slope rating. Choose from the actual drive and blade layout that match your yard and the operating manual’s limits.
