It is self-propelled by its rear wheels; the operator still steers and sets the mowing route.

RYOBI identifies the CrossCut multi-blade system for this exact kit.
Explore this need in the finder →The RY40HPLM08K combines three features that the simpler 20-inch RYOBI 06 and 07 configurations separate: a 20-inch deck, self-propelled rear-wheel drive and the CrossCut multi-blade system. It is sold as a kit with one 8 Ah 40V battery and a charger. This is not the wider 21-inch CrossCut line, and it is not an all-wheel-drive mower. Its appeal is a narrower deck with powered travel and the two-blade clipping arrangement, rather than the maximum width or the highest number of battery packs.
CrossCut in a 20-inch walk-behind
RYOBI says its CrossCut system uses multiple blades to make finer clippings, improve mulching and dispersal, and bag more efficiently. Treat these as manufacturer claims, not independent test results. The 08 differs from the single-blade 06 and 07; someone who wants a conventional blade should not assume it is interchangeable. Follow the operator manual’s inspection and replacement instructions rather than buying a replacement solely by nominal width.
The rear-wheel self-propelled drive has a speed selector and self-propel paddle; the operator still guides the mower but can engage powered travel. This can reduce effort on a longer route, but follow the manual’s terrain warning: do not attempt slopes greater than 15 degrees, mow across a slope rather than up or down, and stop if it feels unsafe. This maximum is not a guarantee that every lesser incline is safe or that rear-wheel drive assures traction.
Seven single-point height positions span 1 to 4 inches. The mower provides mulching, bagging and side-discharge routes; RYOBI lists a catcher bag and side chute in the package and the manual shows the mulch cover. That flexibility is useful for changing clipping treatment, but each setup has its own accessory position and operating steps. The maker also calls the handles foldable for storage. Follow the manual for the safe storage configuration and remove the battery and key before maintenance or clearing clippings under the deck.
One large pack, with a maker-estimated runtime
The kit includes one 40V 8 Ah battery and a rapid charger. RYOBI advertises up to 55 minutes and up to one-half acre with that battery. This is a maker estimate under incompletely specified conditions—not measured runtime, guaranteed lawn size or an assurance that self-propelled use fits every property. Dense or wet grass, low cutting height, bagging, turns, heat and an aged pack can change the result. The manual identifies one battery port, so there is no automatic switch to a second onboard pack; owners near the stated area should plan conservatively for recharging.
The 8 Ah pack has greater nominal capacity than the 6 Ah packs in the 06K and 07K, but does not prove a proportional increase in cutting time. CrossCut changes the blade arrangement and self-propelled drive changes travel; compare them as an operating package, not an unverified “more power” label. The kit suits buyers who want a battery and charger included; an existing 40V owner may prefer a bare-tool package if the exact listing confirms one is available.
Compare it with the 21-inch options
The 08K’s 20-inch deck can be easier to guide through a confined route than a 21-inch model but makes more passes across open ground. RYOBI’s 21-inch CrossCut family provides different tradeoffs: the 04K2 is push-only, the 02K2 has rear-wheel self-propelled drive, and the 03K2 adds all-wheel drive. The 08K is rear-wheel drive, so it does not satisfy a required AWD setup. It also comes with one 8 Ah battery rather than the two 6 Ah batteries supplied with some 21-inch packages. Battery count and nominal amp-hours help describe the box contents, but they are not a test of actual yard coverage.
If you do not specifically want CrossCut, the 07K has the same 20-inch scale and rear-wheel drive with a conventional single blade and 6 Ah kit. The 06K keeps the size and kit battery but removes powered drive. A buyer who wants a 21-inch self-propelled single blade may compare the 01K2. These exact comparisons prevent an easy mistake: the 08K is not simply “the 20-inch version of the 03K2,” because the 03K2 is AWD and the battery package differs.
Limitations and best fit
The mower is still a push-behind walk mower that needs the operator to steer, empty the catcher when bagging, recharge its pack and maintain a sharp, balanced cutting assembly. The public product page does not establish a measured cut-quality score, a real-world area test, actual whole-machine weight, bag capacity or a numerical torque. It compares the motor with a 150 cc gas mower, but that statement is RYOBI’s claim, not an independent gasoline-versus-battery test. Confirm clearance at a tight gate by measuring the complete machine, not by relying on the 20-inch cutting width.
Choose the RY40HPLM08K when you want a 20-inch CrossCut mower, rear-wheel powered drive, and the stated 8 Ah battery-and-charger kit. It is a poor match for someone who insists on a push-only mower, a conventional single blade, a 21-inch deck or all-wheel drive. If walking effort matters but CrossCut does not, compare the 07K; if CrossCut matters but self-propulsion does not, compare the 04K2. The proper choice depends on the exact blade, travel and power package that match your yard, not an assumed runtime guarantee or a slope condition prohibited by the operator manual.

| Reviewed package | The kit page lists one 8 Ah battery and a rapid charger; the mower has one active battery port and one storage compartment for a spare pack, not a second active port. |
| Care and operation note | Follow the exact model operator manual for blade stopping, battery/key removal, cleaning, wet grass, slopes and storage. The inspected 06/07 manual text warns against excessively steep slopes without a numeric limit; the RY40HPLM08 manual says not to operate on inclines over 15 degrees and to mow across, not up/down. That stated limit is not a general safety guarantee. |
