Zero-turn comparison

Cub Cadet Z2 50 or Z2 50S? Lap bars versus Synchro-Steer

The Cub Cadet Ultima Z2 50 and Z2 50S share the main mowing hardware: a 50-inch fabricated three-blade deck, the Kawasaki 726cc FR Series 691V rated at 23 HP, and a Hydro-Gear EZT 2200 hydrostatic drive with the same listed top speeds. Both are gas zero-turn riders, not conventional lawn tractors. The practical comparison is primarily about steering layout and the slope limits documented for each exact model.

Choose by steering style first

The Z2 50, model 17AIEAEL010, uses lap-bar steering. Its manual directs the operator to practice the controls in a level open area before mowing. The Z2 50S, model 17CIGBYLA10, replaces those bars with Cub Cadet’s steering-wheel Synchro-Steer arrangement. That wheel is part of a zero-turn steering system; it does not turn the mower into a lawn tractor. If lap bars are familiar and work for the operator, the standard Z2 50 is the straightforward choice. If wheel control is a firm preference, assess the Z2 50S directly rather than assuming all steering wheels feel the same.

Read the slope limits with the catcher rule

The exact Z2 50 manual says to mow across slopes less than 15 degrees and avoid wet grass, sudden turns and uncertain traction. The Z2 50S manufacturer page advertises Synchro-Steer control on slopes up to 20 degrees, while its manual says to mow across slopes below 20 degrees, not up or down. Both manuals limit use with a grass catcher to slopes no steeper than 10 degrees. The S model therefore has a higher maker-stated cap for the mower-only setup, but a bagging configuration does not inherit that higher number. Neither document guarantees that an individual hillside is safe, and the Z2 50S page specifies no ROPS. Do not use the stated ceiling as the target angle for an actual yard.

Attachment costs and access still matter

Both exact product pages identify the Flat Top Xtreme 50-inch mulch kit, 19A30050GFP, as separate equipment. The Z2 50 page lists the Double Bagger 19B70055100; the Z2 50S page lists that bagger plus a separate mounting kit, 490-950-C062. These accessories are not included in the mower packages. Both use a 50-inch cutting width, but neither exact product page provides full outside dimensions, overall weight, bag volume or a yard-size estimate. Check gates, shed openings, trailer dimensions and turning space using the actual machine measurements from a dealer. Deck width alone is not clearance.

A practical filter sequence

First decide whether gas power, a seated zero-turn and the 50-inch deck are essential. Next choose lap bars or Synchro-Steer wheel control. Only then apply a minimum documented slope-limit preference, and reduce the allowable slope when a grass catcher is part of the plan. Finally decide whether standard side discharge is enough or whether you will purchase the separate mulch or bagging hardware. If a 50-inch minimum and lap bars are required, compare the Z2 50. If steering-wheel Synchro-Steer or a 20-degree manual cap is essential, compare the Z2 50S. If conventional tractor-wheel controls, built-in rollover protection, or a bagging setup for steeper slopes is required, neither of these exact configurations should be forced into that need.
