Three-way comparison
EGO LM2021 or LM2022SP? Compare 20-inch steel-deck mowers
EGO's LM2021 and LM2022SP share a 20-inch steel-deck walk-behind format, but they answer different needs. LM2021 is pushed by the operator; LM2022SP adds variable-speed self-propel and, in its exact package table, one 7.5 Ah battery and Rapid Charger. Both pages list mulching, bagging and side discharge, six-position one-lever height adjustment, foldable storage, LED headlights and IPX4 weather resistance. The choice is not just between two codes: drive, package certainty and access should shape it.
Keep the LM2000-S manual separate
The older LM2000-S is not another name for LM2020, LM2021 or LM2022SP. EGO links a separate operator manual whose cover names LM2000-S/LM2000-S-FC; it lists five cut-height positions, a 1.7-bushel bag and 56.2 lb with the bag but without a battery. Its inspected product page does not establish deck material. EGO labels the LM2000-S “Coming Soon” but also says it is discontinued, so this guide treats it as a model reference rather than a current purchase option. Do not transfer the later steel-deck or kit details to it.
First measure the route and consider the effort
A 20-inch cutting width can suit a segmented lawn or route around obstacles, but it takes more passes than a wider mower over the same open area. Walk the whole route from storage to grass and measure gates, shed doors, turns and narrow gaps. The advertised cut width is not the total mower width. These are still walk-behinds; a deck that clears a gate may be harder to turn in a tight bed or lift across a threshold.
LM2021 has no powered drive. It is the simpler choice if you prefer direct pushing, already know that the route is manageable by hand, or require a push-only mower. LM2022SP's self-propel system can reduce pushing effort during a pass, and its manual describes a drive trigger plus a separate travel-speed lever. That assistance does not make the mower push-only, does not turn the lever into blade-speed control, and does not eliminate the need to reposition the machine or lift it into storage. A self-propel requirement should therefore select LM2022SP, while a push-only requirement should select LM2021.
Read exact battery package information separately
The LM2022SP product page explicitly lists one 7.5 Ah pack and a Rapid Charger in the kit; the LM2020SP row is mower only, without battery or charger. The LM2021 page recommends a 5.0 Ah battery and says compatible batteries are available separately. Its exact product HTML identifies LM2021 itself as the bare-tool SKU, so the mower arrives without a battery or charger. If you already own a compatible EGO ARC battery, a bare-tool purchase may fit your setup; if a pack must arrive in the box, select a documented kit such as LM2022SP rather than treating LM2021's runtime recommendation as package contents.
Runtime figures are not interchangeable with lawn-size estimates. EGO's LM2021 page says up to 60 minutes with a recommended 5.0 Ah battery; the linked LM2020 manual estimates about 55 minutes for its push base model. For LM2022SP the product page displays up to 70 minutes but also says 60 minutes in the description; the linked LM2020SP manual estimates about 70 minutes with 7.5 Ah. Grass density, moisture, cut height and pace change runtime. The specs do not promise that either mower will finish a particular yard on one charge.
Three clipping modes require different setups
Both exact product pages list mulching, bagging and side discharge. The linked LM2020-family manual describes the practical changeover: the mulch insert is removed for the grass bag and installed for the side-discharge chute. That avoids treating the three modes as simultaneous. The manual names a 1.7-bushel bag and six heights between 1 3/16 and 4 inches, but its cover lists LM2020/LM2020SP rather than LM2021 or LM2022SP. It is linked from both pages, and EGO's LM2022SP configuration table separately connects LM2020SP to the mower-only configuration; still, confirm the copy shipped with the exact model before relying on a maintenance or package detail.
A bagging route is not proof of a particular high-lift blade in the kit. Neither reviewed package page confirms that an additional high-lift blade is included. If that blade is essential, neither configuration satisfies that condition without a package-specific confirmation. Likewise, a standard mower image shows the machine itself, not the bag, charger or battery carton.
Use the finder only for requirements that matter
Choose steel deck when that material is essential; choose 20 inches only if the width threshold reflects your access and mowing plan. Add push-only or self-propel according to the way you want to move the mower. A 7.5 Ah included-pack minimum can identify the LM2022SP kit, while any minimum for an included battery rules out the LM2021 bare tool. Requiring a two-pack kit, two active ports, Touch Drive, three selectable blade-speed modes, or a confirmed high-lift blade correctly rules out both of these 20-inch models. Do not turn “battery powered” into an assumption that a particular battery is included.
For more cut width, compare EGO's 21-inch options and 22-inch LM2236SP; they differ in deck material, drive controls and package details. If you want to stay at 20 inches but need powered travel, see the LM2022SP review. For a 20-inch push arrangement, see LM2021. These comparisons help identify which detail changes the shortlist; they do not rank cut quality or predict acreage.
Plan for cleanup and storage
The linked family manual limits mowing to slopes of 15 degrees or less, recommends mowing across a slope rather than up and down, discourages wet grass and says to remove no more than roughly one-third of grass height in a pass. Before cleaning or service, remove the battery and wait for the blade to stop. Clean the deck with a brush or cloth rather than a hose. The handles fold for storage, but check the actual mower dimensions and keep a folded mower stable. These practical limits matter at least as much as the quoted runtime when deciding whether one of these battery-powered walk-behinds fits your regular routine.
