Model-family comparison
How the RYOBI 21-inch 40V HP configurations differ
RYOBI’s 21-inch 40V HP walk-behind names share a platform, but they do not describe one interchangeable mower. The six configurations compared here split on three decisions: whether the mower moves itself, whether it uses one blade or CrossCut multi-blade hardware, and what batteries and charger arrive in the box. Those are better first questions than selecting from runtime headlines.
Choose how the mower travels
The RY40HPLM01K2, 01B and 02K2 are rear-wheel-drive self-propelled models. The 03K2 adds all-wheel drive. The 04K2 and 05K are push-only. A powered travel system may be useful over longer routes, but its presence does not tell you whether the exact handle control feels right or whether a yard’s slope is safe. Use the model manual for terrain limits; the available product pages do not establish a numeric maximum grade. AWD is a configuration fact, not a slope rating.
Choose the blade layout independently
01K2 and 01B use a single rotary blade. 02K2, 03K2 and 04K2 are identified by RYOBI as CrossCut multi-blade models. 05K is a push-only single-blade configuration. The manufacturer’s bagging-efficiency comparisons for CrossCut models are claims, not independent test results. If CrossCut is a must-have, do not substitute an ordinary bagging mode on a single-blade mower. If the priority is a familiar single blade, the 01 family or 05K are the corresponding choices, with their drive and kit differences handled separately.
Read the full model suffix before buying
The 01K2 includes two 6 Ah batteries and a rapid charger. The 01B is the tool-only purchase: no battery and no charger. Their performance headline may look similar because the 01B page describes operation using two separately supplied 6 Ah packs, but the package does not supply them. The 02K2, 03K2 and 04K2 include two 6 Ah packs and a charger. The push-only 05K includes one 8 Ah battery and a fast charger. A single larger-capacity pack should not be assumed to outperform every two-pack arrangement; actual mowing time depends on load, grass, cut height and pack condition.
RYOBI publishes maximum runtime and area figures for these models. Read them as estimates under the maker’s described conditions, not as guaranteed acreage for an individual property. A lawn that is near a claimed maximum may need a different charging plan because grass moisture, density, blade load, pace and obstacles change the amount completed per charge.
Clippings, storage and ownership
The product pages describe bagging, side discharge and mulching with an integrated plug. Confirm the exact attachments in the carton and install them as the operator manual instructs. All six models list a composite deck, but that does not prove a particular lifespan or cut result. RYOBI lists a five-year tool warranty and a three-year battery warranty; refer to the current written terms for the exact serial and purchase.
Before service, remove the key and battery and wait for the blade to stop. Follow the model-specific manual for wet grass, slopes, cleaning and vertical storage. RYOBI advertises folding and vertical storage on the reviewed models; measure the full mower and handle clearance and use the prescribed storage sequence. Do not wash or store a battery mower in a way the manual forbids.
Quick comparison
- 01K2: rear-drive, single blade, two 6 Ah packs and charger.
- 01B: rear-drive, single blade, tool-only; batteries and charger sold separately.
- 02K2: rear-drive CrossCut, two 6 Ah packs and charger.
- 03K2: AWD CrossCut, two 6 Ah packs and charger.
- 04K2: push-only CrossCut, two 6 Ah packs and charger.
- 05K: push-only single blade, one 8 Ah pack and charger.
These exact model assessments do not complete RYOBI’s wider catalog. Other 40V HP model codes and older 40V generations must be evaluated on their own pages and manuals. Keep the 21-inch comparisons above within the model codes stated in their reviews.
