Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Are earlier gasoline mowers acceptable if the frame range is verified?
HRR216K5VXA is an earlier U.S. gas mower for MZCG 7,800,001–7,999,999; check the frame plate and accept the earlier-products filter.
Explore this need in the finder →Is Honda Smart Drive self-propulsion an essential control?
The Honda Type VXA manual selected for the exact K5 serial band describes Smart Drive variable-speed travel; the K5's numerical top speed is not asserted from the K6-labeled table.
Explore this need in the finder →Do you require a separate Roto-Stop blade clutch rather than an engine-and-blade flywheel brake?
Honda's Type VXA manual assigned to this K5 interval describes Roto-Stop; the exact used unit's control condition and actuator shape still need inspection.
Explore this need in the finder →A real K5 serial band, not a guessed K6 substitute
Honda identifies the HRR216K5VXA as the VXA configuration with frame prefix MZCG and serial numbers 7,800,001–7,999,999. That boundary is useful when assessing an older mower or ordering service parts: a VXA badge alone does not tell you whether the frame is a K5, K6 or later model. Honda’s U.S. owner-manual selector links the Type VXA manual for the broader 7,800,001–8,199,999 interval. The linked B250 manual’s specification panel names the K6, however, so I do not transfer its K6-only numerical specifications to this K5 assessment.
Honda now lists its U.S. gasoline walk-behind line as discontinued. This is an earlier-model reference for identifying a used HRR216, not a claim that a new K5 is in stock or that an old example is in good condition. The K5’s exact serial identity and some maintenance parts are documented; an individual mower’s age, repairs, recall status and remaining life still need to be checked on the machine.
What the Type VXA documents support
For this K5 serial band, Honda assigns the Type VXA owner manual, which describes Honda’s Smart Drive variable-speed self-propel control and Roto-Stop blade clutch. That combination suits someone seeking powered travel with a separate blade control rather than a push-only mower or a conventional flywheel brake that stops the engine and blade together. The linked instructions describe a bagging setup and a mulching setup. Check the actual used mower for the expected bag, plug, guards and working controls; a manual does not prove that a particular seller’s machine still has them.
The actuator’s exact shape, cut-height positions, deck width, machine weight, engine displacement, fuel capacity, drive-speed range and grass-bag capacity are not established here as K5-specific figures. The B250 manual does contain a detailed specification panel, but that panel names the K6. If one of those measurements is essential to your decision, do not treat a nearby K6 figure as a K5 guarantee. Use Honda’s serial-specific parts lookup or ask a servicing dealer to confirm the exact frame and engine identifiers.
Useful maintenance clues are unusually precise
Honda’s lawn-mower quick reference guide has a distinct K5 row marked “All” types. For MZCG 7,800,001–7,999,999 it lists air cleaner 17211-ZL8-023, lower blade 72511-VE1-020, upper blade 72531-VE2-020 and recoil starter 28400-Z0L-V20ZB. Those same four part numbers appear for the adjacent K3 through K8 serial bands in that guide, but that shared parts list does not make the model generations identical or establish every dimension and performance figure. Honda’s printed catalog remains the place to validate a specific assembly and any replacement-part supersession.
For a second-hand purchase, ask the seller to show the frame plate and engine serial, then compare the frame number with the K5 range before relying on this review. Check the serial-specific Honda recall/update process and ask for repair records; a model family or serial band cannot certify that one mower has received a required repair. Inspect for safe blade controls, missing guards, leaks, damaged cables and a sound deck. Have a qualified service shop evaluate mechanical concerns rather than assuming a clean exterior means the machine is ready to mow.
Who should consider it—and when to walk away
The K5 VXA is worth considering when you deliberately accept an earlier gasoline mower, can verify the exact MZCG range and value the Type VXA’s self-propelled Smart Drive and separate Roto-Stop operation. Its documented parts crosswalk can help an owner identify common service items. It is a poor match if your decision depends on a confirmed K5 cutting width, weight, minimum cut, bag capacity or other numerical threshold: those exact K5 figures remain unverified in the documents above. Unknown measurements cannot meet an essential yard constraint.
Compare the separate K6 VXA assessment only if the mower’s frame number falls in K6’s 8,000,001–8,199,999 band; the B250 panel’s numeric claims belong to that K6 identity here. The later K7 VXA has its own manual and serial range. If you want an active new-product recommendation, consider current-reference battery mowers instead of assuming a discontinued gasoline model can be bought new. Honda does not publish a K5 lawn-area or runtime rating in these sources.
